A film I made in the Omo Valley, Ethiopia. A love story that still touches me today -- broadcast again this Monday:
KAROS -- les Amoureux du Fleuve
La communauté des Karos vit sur les rives de l'Omo, en Ethiopie. Suivi pas à pas par Stéphane Peyron, un jeune homme, Lale, revient au village après des années d'absence afin d'épouser la belle Jampa, la demoiselle dont il est amoureux et qui lui est promise. Mais pour les membres de la tribu, et plus particulièrement pour la mère de Jampa, une aussi longue absence est forcément synonyme de désertion, voire de trahison. S'étant affranchi de la tradition, le jeune homme ne peut accéder au statut d'ancien ni, par conséquent, prendre femme. A travers cette histoire d'amour tragique s'esquisse le portrait d'une Afrique méconnue qui, curieuse de la modernité, est avant tout soucieuse de conserver son identité, ses rites et traditions.
