Baltimore-born drummer Winard Harper points to Max Roach and Clifford Brown as early inspirations, and he played with Betty Carter’s band. Harper’s percussion skills extend beyond the drums to the balafon, the West African version of the marimba. His group appears regularly all over the United States.

Flutist Huascar Barradas stands in the forefront of the new Venezuelan neo-folklore sound. Barradas was the principal flutist in the Venezuelan National Philharmonic and studied at the Frankfurt Musik Hochshule, where he learned to play the baroque flute, and the Juilliard School of Music. Innovative singer Karen Gray delves into her wide range of jazz tunes, accompanied by saxophonist Buck Hill. Influences on her style, Gray says, include Anita O'Day, Ella Fitzgerald, and Rosemary Clooney. Hill was discovered by Charlie Byrd and became a regular on the D.C. jazz circuit, appearing with Dizzy Gillespie, ...Miles Davis, and Shirley Horn.
