Baltimore-born drummer Winard Harper points to Max Roach and Clifford Brown as early inspirations, and he played with Betty Carter’s band. Harper’s percussion skills extend beyond the drums to the balafon, the West African version of the marimba. His group appears regularly all over the United States.

For nearly three decades, Warren Vache has been playing cornet, trumpet, and flugelhorn for audiences worldwide. His early gigs included the Benny Goodman band and the house band at Condon’s. More recently, he’s performed at the Newport Jazz Festival and Carnegie Hall. Currently, he’s on the faculty of the Juilliard In...stitute for Jazz Studies. The Statesmen of Jazz includes seven-string guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli and bassist Jerry Bruno.
