As much time as I've spent on it this year, and it was A LOT of time and miles, I had no idea it was the 75th anniversary of the parkway in addition to the 75th anniversary of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I may just go to the celebration! We should all be proud of our national parks!

Rockslide Forces Closure of Interstate 40 in WNC, But No Need to Cancel Travel Plans Though a rockslide has forced the closure of Interstate 40 near the North Carolina/Tennessee state line at Exit 451, there is no reason to postpone or cancel a visit to the beautiful mountain communities in...

The first detour is the option I'd recommend and the most likely remain passable when winter weather gets dicey. It avoids the traffic and congestion near Pigeon Forge, and the construction on US 441 / Newfound Gap road in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Both detours will put you on some very curvy mountain roads which will slow progress, but... See More the reward is stunning scenery. For those who are continuing east, it is a quick link to get on I-26 from Hot Springs via US 25 south and follow it to I-240 E in Asheville which avoids much of the really twisty parts. The ride from Hot Springs to Maggie Valley via NC 209 is a local classic.
