Sniplits The baseball season has come to a close, and this week's free audio short tells the story of the close of two baseball careers and the final match up between a batter and pitcher. Check out "The At-Bat" by Thomas Anselm.

Sniplits Last chance to get "Blind Date: Circa 1960" by Wayne Scheer for free. It's a great little tale of teen angst. New free story tomorrow.

Sniplits (L-R) Toni L.P. Kelner, Dana Cameron, Sean Chercover, Jane K. Cleland, Kristine Kathyrn Rusch.

Sniplits

Sniplits All but one of the panelists (Jane) said they find it harder to write short stories than novels. Kristine said it's like balancing spinning plates. Novels are more forgiving while, as Sean said, in a short story every word has to be the right word and to count.

Sniplits

Sniplits All panelists mentioned their inner critics (who seem to be somewhat louder and more urgent when they write shorts). Sean Chercover called writing an exercise in self-loathing. It got a big laugh - yet we all know it's true!

Sniplits

Sniplits Do you ever wonder what inspires a story? For Sean Chercover, he wanted to explore the darkside of a "minor" character (Gravedigger) in his series and experiment with writing in the 3rd person. For Toni L.P. Kelner it was reading about pirate codes and the trials they'd actually hold on ship.

Sniplits I was very excited to attend "Short, Dark and Good Reading" this a.m. Panelists Simon Wood, Sean Chercover, Kristine Kathryn Rusch, Dana Cameron and Jane K. Cleland. How is it that people who write such dark stuff are themselves so damn funny? Each is nominated for "Best Short Story" Anthony Award.

Sniplits B'con day 2. Went to the Sisters (and brothers) in Crime breakfast - what a terrific group. They were founded by Sara Paretsky and others in the late '80s to help women who write, review, buy, or sell crime fiction. Check them out at: http://www.sistersincrime.org.

Sniplits "The Fixers" session w/Lee Child, Brett Battles Andrew Grant & Mike Lawson was packed. Favorite line by Lee Child: We don't need no stinkin' character arcs.

Sniplits

Sniplits "Night of the Living Dead" - "what done its" rather than "who done its." Most of the panel saw paranormal as part of characterization rather than plot device. Who knew how much real research some of these authors do!

At "Killer Hobbies," the authors, whose protagonists are all crafters, discussed parallels between constructing a craft project and crafting a novel, and how focusing on a craft project can help clear and focus both the writer's and character's mind. Beth (@Beth) Groundwater's protagonist organizes her thoughts as she ...creates gift baskets - which then also serve as a "means of entry" to places to search for clues.Read More

Sniplits The 40th Bouchercon is off to a good start! A couple of Sniplits authors were on panels today, including Adrian Magson on the 21st Century P.I.s panel and Beth Groundwater on the Killer Hobbies panel.

Sniplits

Sniplits "The Murder of Katie Boyle," by Libby Fischer Hellman is this week's free story at http://www.sniplits.com. It's the first story we've recorded with two narrators - ck it out and let us know what you think.
