Social Media Marketing for Dummies Study shows that Facebook users willingly give out personal information. Do you think marketers inappropriately take advantage of this? http://news.cnet.com/8301-17939_109-10410257-2.html?tag=newsEditorsPicksArea.0

Facebook users still haven't mastered the whole 'privacy thing' when it comes to sharing personal information with others, a study from security firm Sophos finds. Read this blog post by Don Reisinger on Webware.

only if they're smart! no really, I think people expect their information to be used but most marketers are ill-equipped to do anything meaningful with the data. at minimum marketers should use the data they have to make their consumers experience more relevant. kind of like Pandora does with music, if I tell you I like it give me more, if I hate it never make me see it again (I'm talking to you Singles Ads on FB).

I think you're really right about that. Marketers are still learning how best to do use the data sometimes. Interestingly, the data is best used on the advertising side but hardly to make the consumer experiences more powerful ~SS

David Deal Really enjoying your book, Shiv, although as a fellow employee I suppose I am biased. I appreciate your recognizing how marketing & PR execs can act as stewards of a company's Social Influence Marketing voice (given my role as VP of marketing for Razorfish!). Shiv, as you wrote this book, did you come across insights ...that surprised you? Did writing the book change or evolve your own thinking about Social Influence Marketing (and if so, how)? Thanks!

David, thanks for your thoughts. Yes, my own thinking definitely did involve - here are two of the many notable ways.

Firstly, I realized you cannot separate out Enterprise 2.0 and organizational dynamics from social media. They go hand in hand.

And secondly, in a similar fashion mobile cannot be ignored. The mechanics and experiences around social influence increasingly take place through mobile phones and every social influence marketing marketer needs to think about mobile asap!

And just to follow up regarding the fast pace of change with everything around social media marketing - I agree a lot is changing quickly which is why I recommend blogs for people to follow once they've gotten the fundamentals down. But even then the core concepts do not change that quickly (and haven't in the last 2-3 years). For example the ... See Morenotion of tapping into influencers is not new but harnessing social influencers is (expert, referent and positional) and hardly gets a mention in most online conversations. The book is meant to be a starting point for learning not the final conclusion. ~SS

I do appreciate you replying and relaying your point of view on it. I will admit, I didn't read the whole thing cover to cover, so my review is obviously biased. I also don't want to discourage anyone from buying the book if this is something they think will help them.

The fact that you are replying in social media form here on facebook for example definitely shows you DO know what you're doing. ...

So, perhaps the book just isn't for me... but it is for other people.

Whether we like it or not, we're going to start seeing many more ads in Twitter. As The New York Times reported today, services like Ad.ly, IZEA and Likes are furiously putting twitter ad networks in place. SocialMedia.com has also done several tests in this realm too.
