Gillian Lasker Sonia I live in Australia and noticed you have previously done a workshop in New Zealand, any chance you'll be doing one in 2010 somewhere in our region? My girlfriend (who I've just got addicted to mosaics) and I would love to attend one but Europe and America is a little too far to go for us.

Sonia King Mosaics I can't help myself. I have to post another link to the blog written by Emma Biggs - not because she mentions the upcoming book that we're co-writing but rather because of the stunning image of Bella, one of her sweet cats. You, however, may want to read the entry because of the very cogent discussion of 'seeing' and selection in mosaic design.

I am sure this is obvious to many of you, but perhaps not to everyone. I have spent the weekend teaching a course on Colour and Design. There are many aspects of the course, but I’m going to talk about one, as it is an approach to looking that can be taught. ...

Sonia King Mosaics Here's a link to the Creative Arts Center of Dallas fan page. It's a non-profit, adult education art school that offers a supportive environment to artists at all levels. I've taught regular mosaic classes there for well over ten years. It's a wonderful choice for tax-deductible, end of the year donations!

Sonia King Mosaics Karin's part was extra special but the Friday class always has good snacks. Here's Kathy with the second HUGE bottle of champagne for making mimosas. These went along with smoked salmon, two kind of lettuce wraps, cheeses, cookies and lamingtons! (Oh and we did do a little mosaicking too ;-)

Sonia King Mosaics Today was the last class for our dear friend, Karin, who's moving back to Australia. We had a party and sent Karin off with some Texas cookbooks to remember us by. We'd have been much sadder but Karin's coming to the workshop in Istanbul!

Sonia King Mosaics Trusty assistant, Leigh (aka Lele) and I head out into the garage again. Another day sorting through lovely materials and packing boxes. We're shipping inventory to stock the new studio in San Francisco! But first we have to go through stacks and stacks of materials that haven't made their way onto the nice neat shelv...es. These are just a small corner of the stacks of inventory. I think a twelve step program for buying mosaic materials is in order!

Sonia King Mosaics This is some of the Saturday class at the Creative Arts Center of Dallas. It's bon voyage for Jack the Jackalope. (A jackalope is a Texas fantasy animal that's a cross between a jack rabbit and an antelope ;-) Kyle started Jack several years ago in my "Animal Farm" class and he's finally going home! (Kyle's on the far right)

Sonia King Mosaics Congratulations to Nancie and Bill of Mosaic Art Now. Today marks the 100th post for the blog which presents delicious stories from the world of mosaic. Check it out!
Mosaic Art Now (MAN) was founded in 2008 by mosaic entrepreneur and artist Bill Buckingham with the publication of the first magazine. Since then, MAN's operational scope has grown to include a website, blog, and this Facebook page. Bill is now ably abetted in his efforts by co-editors Nancie Mills Pipgras and Michae...l Welch. MAN is a publication of Mosaic Rocks Press. MAN is supported by organizations, suppliers and fabricators who are just as passionate as we are about contemporary mosaics. We ask that you support them with your business and maybe just a "thank you" now and then. Find out who these fine folks are at www.mosaicartnow.com or refer to your copy of the magazine.

Any chance you'll be doing any workshops in Oakland CA again?

Sonia King Mosaics Many thanks for all the letters (over 50!) from Mrs. Wolfe's 5th grade class at P.B.Coeymans Elementary School in Ravena, NY. They studied mosaic art this semester and sent kind words about my work. You can see a few of their mosaics in this image. Thanks to Annabelle, Megan, Daniel, Joey, Ryan, Julia, Michael, Hale...y, Jack, Rebecca, Ben, Christian, Austin, Kaylie, Erica, Lucy, Sydney, Scott, Kes, Chris, Stephen, Julie, Abby, Johnny, Mikayla, Amiliana, Hailey, Amanda, Aaron, Tiffany, Zach, Tyler, Madison, Joshua, Stevie, Andrew, Emily, Bryan, Eric, Chad, Chad Z., Morgan, Johnny, Mackenzie, Hope, Jordan, Brianna, Kaitlin, Matthew, Logan, Nina and especially Mrs. Wolfe! Sonia King Mosaics Check out the new blog from Emma Biggs, great writing and insights.

Spent the morning working on the paintings, and the afternoon working on the mosaic for the SLBI. Both tasks have their challenges. At the moment I am feeling frustrated by the limitations of my smalti palette. ...

Sonia King Mosaics And here's another link to "What is Beauty". This one shows the 10 examples Matt chose to illustrate beauty in art, including two of my favorites: Roman mosaics from the Bardo Museum in Tunisia and Byzantine mosaics from the cathedral in Monreale, Sicily.

Art critic Matt Collings has been working to define what beauty in art is. He picked out 10 different works and objects to analyse. What is Beauty? is broadcast on Saturday, 14 November, 2009 at 2030 GMT on BBC Two.

Sonia King Mosaics "What is Beauty", a new show by British art critic, artist and broadcaster Matthew Collings, aired last night on the BBC in the UK. And mosaics from the Bardo and Monreale are shown as examples of beauty in art! Highly recommended. Matt has the unique ability to communicate complex concepts in an easily understood way.... If you're in the UK, it's on BBC's iPlayer for the next week, elsewhere we'll wait for the DVD. (You can always watch another recent show by Matt called "This is Civilization" on YouTube.)

Matthew Collings asks whether beauty is a matter of taste or a more universal concept.
