If you are not familiar with our music, let me explain it this way: Sons of Korah is a project focused on the biblical psalms. We believe the psalms are of central importance in that they portray a simple and authentic biblical spirituality. Traditionally they have performed a central role in the Judeo-Christian heritage and they have performed this role as songs. So we are trying to give a fresh expression to this traditional endeavour. One of the main purposes of the psalms in their original context was to preserve the vitality, simplicity and authenticity of the ancient faith in a people who were vulnerable to the influences of every cultural tide. They were a way of encapsulating the truth in Poetic form. They expressed the biblical faith from the inner life perspective through prayers and songs of praise. In this sense they were also tools of reflection on and participation in a timeless revelation of truth. And so we present our music as a tool to be used and used again. It is not music for music's sake but music designed to enable you to meditate on the scriptures and connect with God in a fresh way.
Here is our story in brief: It is hard to remember exactly when we began but we think it was in 1993. In any case it is probably best to say that the psalms project, that has preoccupied us for nearly a decade and a half, sort of emerged over a couple of years. Rod, Jason and I (Matt) were at theological college together in Geelong, Victoria Australia. I was studying the psalms and since I was a musician I began to adapt them into musical form. The others guys did the same. It was a fantastic artistic challenge that we were at the same time profoundly edified by. We didn't have any great plans at that stage, just a real passion for the scriptures and a love for music. As we combined the two we felt increasingly compelled by the potential of this idea. So we walked ahead, enjoying the journey, and now, nearly a decade and a half later, we are working on our sixth album (our very first mixed-content album is no longer available) and have travelled far and wide. Over the time lineup changes bought a freshness to the project as members moved on and others joined in for the ride. We have worked with amazing people and gifted musicians - it has been a great privelege. We remain an independant band. We never really fit very well into the commercial Christian music scene and so going with a label and doing the regular promo route could never have suited us. But support for our project from all over the world has been overwhelming. I could tell you one story after another of divine providence and maybe oneday I will when I have more time. But it is clear to me now that God runs this little outfit and we just try not to get in his way. That is not to invalidate people who do things differently -- you know, it is 'horses for courses'. Anyway, if I get time I will try to fill out this little narrative sometime. In the meantime I had better chuff off and catch my plane. In the meantime I hope you can get some of our music and if you like it, do us a favour, and tell a friend. Thanks heaps.
