The Southeast Asia Resource Action Center (SEARAC), formerly known as the Indochina Refugee Action Center, was formed in 1979 to facilitate the resettlement of refugees from the Southeast Asian countries of Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam and foster the development of nonprofit organizations led by and for these Southeast Asian communities. Southeast Asians constitute one of the largest group of refugees – almost 2 million – ever to build new lives in the United States. Nearly all Southeast Asians entered the U.S. as refugees or as relatives of refugees at various times after the end of the Vietnam War. They began to relocate to the U.S. in 1975, overcoming insurmountable obstacles of persecution and torture.

SEARAC is the only national organization representing all of these populations simultaneously and supporting their voices as new Americans who have the right to and must engage in the civic process. Since its inception, SEARAC has served as a bridge between Southeast Asian and other refugee communities and the American public, promoting integration and civic engagement for a stronger overall America.
