Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy Adam-and-Eve Orchid (Aplectrum hyemale)- Photo of the Adam and Eve bulbs

Adam-and-Eve is also a reference to the growth habit of the root bulbs as the leaf and flower arise from the current seasons growth (Eve) while last year's bulb (Adam), from which sprang Eve, is still present.

Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy Botany Quiz Time! When monitoring our protected properties in the fall, sometimes we are lucky enough to come across as single leaf of this obscure native plant poking out from among the brown, fallen leaves. Distinguished by silvery stripes along its veins, it gets its name from the shape of its root which is split in...to a pair of swollen segments. Can you name this plant?

Nice work! Adam-and-Eve Orchid (Aplectrum hyemale)

This orchid is also known as puttyroot because when the root is crushed it produces a gelatinous fluid that was used by Native Americans as a mending agent for cracked pottery. A single leaf sticks out all winter to absorb the sun, storing energy and nutrients until the leaf disappears in the spring when the tree canopy shades the forest floor.

Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy Botany Quiz Time! When monitoring our protected properties in the fall we often encounter this native evergreen fern. The leaflets are uniquely shaped and give a clue to its name. Can you name this fern?

Right on! Christmas Fern (Polystichum acrostichoides)

It's one of the most common ferns in eastern North America. There are actually quite a few stories about how the Christmas fern got its name. You guys got two of them: the stocking shaped leaflets and the fact that the fern is green in the winter months during the holiday season. A third is ... See Morethat early settlers often gathered the fronds to be used as Christmas decorations.

Another point of interest is that Christmas ferns have been known to help with soil conservation on steep slopes as the fronds hold fallen leaves in place, creating soil.

Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy Join members and friends of SAHC on Tuesday, November 10th for a moderate hike into the backcountry and the headwaters of Rocky Fork Creek. Located along the Eastern Tennessee/North Carolina border in the counties of Unicoi and Greene, Rocky Fork is a newly protected 10,000 acre tract that has been called a “Southern A...ppalachian gem” because of its tremendous environmental and economic value.

Protection of this property was made possible by the partnering efforts of The Conservation Fund, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, and the USDA Forest Service. David Ramsey, nature photographer/SAHC board member, will share his knowledge of the cultural and natural history of the area. The hike will be 7-8 miles roundtrip with a good chance to see bear and/or brook trout. Hike leaders will be wearing blaze orange vests for added safety. The hike is limited to 15 people.
