Dr. Evan Matthews, Assistant Professor of Music at St. Thomas Aquinas College, will explore the development of hard bop as a distinct style in jazz. Various musical examples will be played as part of the discussion. A question and answer session will follow. A jazz concert will take place in the Sullivan Theatre at 8:0...0 p.m.
Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Kenny Clarke and others developed an innovative approach to playing jazz during after-hours jam sessions at Minton’s Playhouse in West Harlem in New York City during the Second World War and just after. This highly sophisticated style, although it attracted many devoted fans, was never commercially successful. Yet its influence on jazz players and listeners cannot be overestimated. It also inspired counter reactionary styles in jazz, perhaps because of its inaccessibility. Among these styles was hard bop, which became popular in the early 1950s.
Evan Matthews has been a professional vocal and dramatic performer in the New York City Metropolitan area for 25 years, performing in musicals, plays, concerts, church, temple, nightclubs and the occasional television appearance. He has performed at Town Hall, Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and many other venues in New York City. Being both a classical and jazz vocalist he has performed in a wide range of situations including performances with Dave Brubeck, Sir Colin Davis and the New York Choral Artists. Evan holds the Doctor of Education degree from Columbia University. He was a music professor and coordinator of private voice instruction at Hofstra University before joining the faculty at Saint Thomas Aquinas College in 2005.
Friends of the Library events are free and open to the community.
