Speaking of Faith The case for matrilineal descent as part of a Jewish high school admissions policy reaches Britain's Supreme Court.

Here’s a fascinating case of modern law meets 5000-year-old religious tradition. At the end of October, the British Supreme Court decided that — in the case of accepting applicants to a Jewish high school — observance, not ethnicity, should be used in determining admissions. ...

In OKC we hear your program on Sunday mornings at 7AM. It's a great way to wake up and begin my day. I especially enjoyed the recent interview with Karen Armstrong. At a time when religious rightousness is rearing its head, such a refreshing and compassionate approach by her. I've read Ms Armstrong's book on the Buddha.... And after listening to her on your show, I bought her book on Muhammed. Thanks for this kind, intelligent program!Read More

Speaking of Faith
Monday, November 16, 2009 @ 7:00 p.m., reception at 6:00 p.m.
Come join us as Interfaith Youth Core founder Eboo Patel sits down for a conversation with Krista Tippett, the host of public radio's Speaking of Faith. How does she answer the kinds of questions she asks of others? And how has her sense of the creative dial...ogue between belief and non-belief in modern life changed?
Beginning at 6:00 p.m., enjoy a pre-Thanksgiving reception and participate in assisting poet/collage artist Krista Franklin lay the foundation for a mixed-media collage entitled “Speaking of Faith.” Guests will be provided a small piece of paper to write one word or phrase that articulates their definition of faith. These writings will serve as the base for a larger mixed-media collage that Franklin will create to commemorate the evening.
Then join us for the main event: As a radio host, Tippett takes on thought-provoking subjects, interviewing wise thinkers and activists, asking new questions of old debates and creating a space for fresh thinking and real conversation. At this event, the tables will be turned: Patel will lead the discussion, asking Tippett the types of questions she usually poses to her guests and exploring the surprises and discoveries she has made as religion has moved from the sidelines to the forefront of world affairs.
“I’m fascinated,” Tippett says, “in how insights we call ‘religious’ or ‘spiritual’ find expression in every area of life – from work to parenting, from television to quantum physics. I am thrilled by the creative interplay I find across supposed dividing lines – science versus religion, for example – on the hardest and most interesting issues before us.”
The first stop on a national tour, this event will undoubtedly be a special evening.
Additional information:
This event is also taking place as part of Michigan Avenue Forums at Fourth Presbyterian Church, which work to promote civic formation within the Chicagoland community by presenting a series of events that feature important thinkers and public leaders in live lecture or debate format, discussing current issues of civic and ethical priority.

I was born on the night John F. Kennedy was elected president: November 9, 1960. To be more precise, the election itself was on November 8, but I was born in the wee hours of the night, in a long ago age before computerized returns, as his slim victory became apparent. ...

Richard Parker "I do see religion as a kind of art form." -- Karen Armstrong (from today's show). Bravo!

Elisabeth Thacker I enjoy your show so very much. I have learned, laughed, cried and become spellbound on more than one occasion...like TODAY. Your show with Karen Armstrong ws fascinating...many times during the broadcast I found myself finishing her sentences...our experience discovering "God" has been very similar.. Many blessings!!

Shelley Davies Gentile Outstanding show today Krista!

Andrew Newton You're in your ninth year. Still patiently waiting on a comprehensive episode specifically focusing on the American Wiccan community. We'll be patient and keep waiting, but how much longer? I know it will take courage to do this, but you can do it.

Raymond Sigrist The SOF show on Eckhart Tolle (10/8/09) is great. He is a genius.
