I had no family history of SB, weighed 130 lbs (5'8"), and was in perfect health (no diabetes, no meds). I took prenatals for 6 months prior to conceiving via donor sperm, and took pains to eat healthy, balanced meals throughout my pregnancy.

Perhaps my body doesn't process folic acid properly. Maybe a combination of genetic and environmental factors resulted in my daughter having spina bifida, despite the lack of family history on my side or any of the known risk factors. However, it seems just as likely that the donor's genes or environmental exposure could be the cause.

If I were to try to conceive again (regardless of which donor I used), my doctor would recommend that I take the higher folic acid dosage, because I've already had one pregnancy result in a neural tube defect. Seems reasonable that anyone using this donor (with or w/o their own history of SB) should get the same advice for the same reason. He has a child with spina bifida, too. ... Read More
