This sculpture, titled The Navigators, incorporates a lookout tower, mule deer buck, coyote, and a great horned owl. All four of these are very common in the Inland Northwest. I want people to see something familiar that can then help lead to a personal experience or connection with the art work. The arrangement of th...ese familiar animals on the tower is not so common at all, and this is where the story telling begins. By putting multiple characters together, many imaginative ideas appear that may help lead us to find our own story as we ponder what is going on with these animals that are cooperating with each other. What has brought them together? What are they doing? In the real world, you wouldn’t see this kind of friendly dialog. There is much room for interesting and intelligent concepts to emerge. Art enables us to go to a place we haven’t been before. I work with animal imagery because they are so different from each other, allowing for make believe roles evolve as they share space together. These three animals are individuals with their own identities, personalities, and agendas. Humans are the same in this respect. We can view this sculpture as three capable animals on a big adventure, and/or we can see ourselves through them and go for the ride. My idea is to create a piece of art that is timeless, positive, and can be appreciated by a large and diverse group of people, both in the present and future.
