Every team does things re: spring training differently. Normally schedules are worked out months in advance, but the move of the Orioles and the complexity in scheduling (odd number of teams) delayed things.

The Jays actually have a really strange way of selling tickets. There is a 48 hour window that they will sell individual tickets... and for the next two weeks, they'll only sell ticket plans for 5 or more games. Every time when I ordered seats during that window, I usually had great seats. Otherwise, I either buy them outside or on the internet. That stadium is one of my favorites, but they have a safety net that goes a lot further around than most other parks. I try not to sit behind it.

One thing we should check on: there are rules that MLB teams must have four regulars in the lineup during away spring training games. Don't know if that rule applies to minor-league exhibitions.

Alas, poor HoHoKam, I knew thee well. But not well enough to prevent Mesa and the Chicago Cubs from casting covetous eyes toward a new spring-training facility within the city...

I called a friend today who lives in Phoenix . He said the Cubs and Mesa are a red hot topic right now . The Rickett's group are about to visit Mesa in the near future . THe fact that Rickett's has a Florida home has the rumor mill all stirred up.

Because the Japanese professional season starts in mid-March, there will be no Japanese teams training in Tucson in 2010 -- but 2011 remains a possibility. That's the word from a Tucson delegation charged with bringing new blood into Tucson for spring training...

What's wrong with the city of Tucson? They had three good teams there, and then did little to nothing to try to keep them. Now they want to spend time and resources bringing a foreign league to train there? Too little too late, looks like to me.

We liked to make the roadtrip from Mesa to Tucson . It was always a great day for our group . Has not been the same since the Sox moved to Glendale . What was Tucson thinking when the clubs started packing up ????

The politics in Arizona and Tucson are really weird. On one hand they were steamrolled by Phoenix and Maricopa County on the financing front; years ago the county put in a local car-rental tax to pay for spring training, and Pima County never did. Tucson has a very strong base of anti-tax retirees, who pretty much killed every attempt at public ... Read Morefinancing of facilities. Some folks in Pima County worked hard for financing. But at the end of the day MLB teams didn't really want to be in Tucson, either. If Marana had been able to pull off the Dodgers move several years ago things might have been different. But for scheduling you need four teams in a cluster (more for extended spring, AZ League and minor-league purposes than MLB purposes), and without a fourth in Tucson the handwriting was on the wall.

The next time someone questions the economic impact of spring training on a community, just pass them along to Vero Beach, where the loss of the Los Angeles Dodgers after Spring Training 2008 had a significant -- and traceable -- effect on the local economy.

The prices that the Dodgers were charging were totally out of line though, I'll go to all the other stadiums before I pay that price. Love the fields at Surprise, Peoria, and the ANgels complex.

I attended two Dodger's games in Arizona. They were NOT packed. Glendale is a very large facility by spring training standards, and the crowds were good, but they were not sold out; not even close to being sold out.
The Glendale complex is very impressive and has everything, and more, that a team needs. But Dodgertown will always have a special place in my heart and it really is a shame the Dodgers left.
