More about Dr. Donald Spicer -
Dr. Donald Spicer is currently the Associate Vice Chancellor for Information Technology and CIO for the University System of Maryland. He is also a Senior Fellow of the Educause Center for Applied Research (ECAR). In his University System of Maryland capacity he provides strategic direction and coordination for IT activities across the 13 institution system of public higher education in Maryland. In his role as ECAR Senior Fellow he participates in national research studies regarding trends and issues related to IT in higher education.
Previous to his assuming the position at Maryland, Dr. Spicer held CIO level positions at Vanderbilt University and the University of Notre Dame. Prior to those positions he held a senior position in IT administration at Dartmouth College.
He has a BA and PhD (mathematics) from the University of Minnesota and a Diploma in Computer Science from Corpus Christi College of Cambridge University. For the first half of h

Community inquiry provided the conceptual base for American Pragmatism, the philosophy developed by John Dewey, Jane Addams, William James, Oliver Wendell Holmes and other leading public intellectuals at the turn of the century. Community inquiry reminds us that learning is not separate from life and advocates for a fully democratic social organism. We see the work of the Pragmatists reflected in the progressive pedagogy of Dewey¹s University Laboratory Schools in Chicago, and the community-based action research conducted by Addams with the tenement residents surrounding Hull-House. Both Dewey and Addams were active in the struggle for peace, tolerance, and human rights worldwide. Recently, we've witnessed a renewal of paradigms that link education with social change, many of which involve strong partnerships between universities and communities...
