
The Marine Institute has been named the winner of the Distinction in Innovation Award at the 2009 Export and Innovation Awards for its work with SmartBay, an oceans observation project that plays a valuable role in support of marine operations in Placentia Bay.

The Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) of Memorial University of Newfoundland held its annual Autumn Presentation of Scholarships and Awards on Wednesday, Nov. 18. Seventy-nine scholarships were presented during the ceremony, as well as two awards.

The Marine Institute has been named the winner of the Distinction in Innovation Award at the 2009 Export and Innovation Awards. The Marine Institute won for its work with SmartBay, an MI-led oceans observation project that plays a valuable role in support of marine operations in Placentia Bay.

The Marine Institute will honour the memory of April Arnott during the Autumn Presentation of Scholarships and Awards on Wednesday, Nov. 18.

The Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) of Memorial University of Newfoundland honoured veterans of World War I and World War II on Tuesday, Nov. 10 with a Remembrance Day ceremony.

The Marine Institute invites the public to attend a special ceremony on Tuesday, Nov. 10 in honour of Remembrance Day. The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. and takes place at the Marine Institute’s Ridge Rd. campus in St. John's.

The Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland was the site of a royal visit on Tuesday, Nov. 3, as his Royal Highness Prince Charles took a tour of MI and its facilities as part of a three-day visit to Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Provincial Government will immediately provide $600,000 to the Canadian Centre for Fisheries Innovation (CCFI) at the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University. This places Newfoundland and Labrador at the forefront of fisheries and aquaculture research and development in Canada.

The Marine Institute celebrated National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) by inviting junior high students to tour some of its facilities.

The Marine Institute's School of Ocean Technology has entered into a research partnership with Rutter Inc. that will see the MV Anne Pierce, MI's research and training vessel, outfitted with two of Rutter's advanced radar processing systems and a voyage data recorder.

The Marine Institute’s Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Resources (CSAR) is undertaking an analysis of marine life in Placentia Bay, supported by a $174,000 investment from the Provincial Government.

The Marine Institute’s Centre for Aquaculture and Seafood Development (CASD) has received $42,690 to assist with the installation and testing of an onboard mechanical sorting system for use in the whelk fishery.
