C.P.E. Bach, son of Johann Sebastian Bach, described life in his father’s home as a “musical beehive.” It must have been, because J.S. Bach had 21 children. Many went on to successful professional musical careers, with Carl Philip Emmanuel and Johann Christian enjoying greater fame during their lifetimes than their fat...her. The family music making, along with impromptu get-togethers with friends, must have been extraordinary indeed. Members of the Aulos Ensemble will have some fun pretending to be members of the Bach family, treating us to Bach favorites, in this one-hour program specifically for young school-age musicians.

Join us as Staller Center welcomes stars from the 50th Anniversary tour of the Monterey Jazz Festival. Elegant playing, sensitive melodies and infectious rhythms inspired The Los Angeles Times to name KENNY BARRON “one of the top jazz pianists in the world” and Jazz Weekly to call him “the most lyrical piano player of ...our time.” Early in his career, Barron played with Dizzy Gillespie, James Hubbard, Stanley Turrentine, Milt Jackson, and Buddy Rich.

Returning to Staller, violinist REGINA CARTER “creates music that is wonderfully listenable, probingly intelligent and, at times, breathtakingly daring—taking the listener into the future of jazz” noted Time magazine. Carter has performed with symphony orchestras across the country, recorded with such artists as Aretha Franklin and Mary J. Blige, and won acclaim for her solos on Wynton Marsalis’ Blood on the Fields tour and Cassandra Wilson’s Travelin’ Miles concert at Lincoln Center.

With seven Grammy nominations and six consecutive years at the top of the Down Beat Critics’ and Jazz Times readers’ polls, KURT ELLING has attained elite status in the jazz world before reaching the age of 40. His rich baritone voice spans four octaves and displays an astonishing technical facility and emotional depth, inspiring the San Francisco Chronicle to call him “the most flamboyantly creative jazz singer to emerge in the last decade.”

Guitarist RUSSELL MALONE has toured internationally with Diana Krall, receiving critical acclaim in his role as Diana's right hand both in concert and on her recordings. Russell was a featured performer in Robert Altman's film Kansas City, and has toured or recorded with Harry Connick, Jr., Bucky Pizzarelli, Branford Marsalis, Kenny Barron, Cyrus Chestnut and Patti Austin.

This sunny 19th century comic classic has been called one of the happiest ballets in existence. Encompassed in three lively acts are lighthearted renderings of love, loss, mistaken identity, revenge, reconciliation and to wrap it all up, a wedding with the promise of happily ever after. Coppelia, with choreography by A...rthur Saint-Leon and music by Leo Delibes, had its premiere on May 25, 1870 in Paris and was an instant hit. If Giselle is the 19th century’s great tragic ballet, dance historians often cite Coppelia as the century’s standout comedy.

The Moscow Festival Ballet was founded in 1989 when legendary principal dancer of the Bolshoi Ballet Sergei Radchenko realized his vision of a company that would bring together the highest classical elements of the great Bolshoi and Kirov Ballet companies in an independent new company within the framework of Russian classical ballet. The Moscow Festival Ballet has toured extensively throughout the United States since 1997 and returns this year for a 17-week tour.

Christian McBride is the premier bassist on today's jazz and pop scene. The first choice as collaborator for everyone from Sting and Billy Joel to Sonny Rollins and Pat Metheny, he is first and foremost an outstanding bandleader and composer.

In 2008 he premiered his ...major original work "The Movement Revisited," a musical meditation with chorus and orchestra on the personalities and philosophies of the Civil Rights Movement, in honor of the 40th anniversary of its peak. He continues to excel in a variety of other bandleading contexts and is quite simply without peer on the instrument. Join us as Christian McBride and his band bring “bad, bad funky jazz” to Staller’s Recital Hall.
