Greenhouse staffer Matt Opel traveled to Elizabeth Park in Hartford the other day, and set up a small educational display of cacti and succulents on behalf of the Connecticut C&S Society. Some of the plants are on loan from the EEB greenhouses. Elizabeth Park will have the plants for the next few months, so stop in if ...you're in Hartford and want to get a sample of what you can see at UConn or at the CCSS annual show.Več

UCONN - Ecology & Evolutionary Biology Plant Growth Facilities Cute as a button - these tiny Epithelantha micromeris ssp. micromeris (common name = Button Cactus) seedlings are coming along nicely. Only about 1 cm in diameter they are indeed the size of buttons. But fear not, they will get larger with time....

UCONN - Ecology & Evolutionary Biology Plant Growth Facilities got in a new myrmecophytic epiphyte today - Hoya imbricata var. basiorotunda - a very striking vine with cupped leaves that harbor ants in a symbiotic relationship. Well placed roots under the leaves absorb waste from the ants to nourish the plant. Very cool. Not currently in the public area - please ask if you'd like to see it...

a neat epiphytic ericoid (related to blueberries and azaleas) endemic
to the montane cloud forests of Ecuador in bloom this week. Its up on
the epiphyte tree so you'll have to look overhead. Produces a
substantial lignotuber as well though you may need to get up on the
ladder to view the lignotuber. Marginal photo for n...ow, I'll try to get
some better photos posted to the main website page later on. Enjoy....

UCONN - Ecology & Evolutionary Biology Plant Growth Facilities Which came first - the flower or the pollinator? Before angiosperms (flowering plants) arrived on the scenes, most primitive plants were wind pollinated, but a new report in this weeks journal Science suggests animal pollinators were here in the Mesozoic before the flowers showed up.
