Studio of the Arts (sota) presents Shelly Voorhees’ APPARITIONS: Giving Dialogue between the Permanent and the Transitory
A native of Kensington, MD, Shelly Voorhees studied among top art institutions nationwide and abroad including the Maryland Institute College of Art, MD, the Pratt Institute, NY, Corcoran College of... Art + Design, DC, the Maryland College of Art and Design, MD, and abroad in Italy with the School of Art & Design at Montgomery College. Currently working in Vermont her work has been commissioned nationwide and published in the Gazette and The Montgomery Life Magazine to name a few.
In this exhibition Shelly presents her own take on the traditional idea of apparitions. In an attempt to humanize the spirits she painted this black and white mixed-media portrait series of female spirits with simple gestures to dynamically represent the figures in moments of contemplation and emotional transition.
Her incorporation of specific artistic elements of texture, depth, layers, luminosity, and motion, are equally important in conveying the merging of life's energy with the portraits’ ethereal. These moments are expressions of the duality between the movement and the still, the landscape and the figure, the real and the ethereal. They are psychological portraits that reflect the emotional undercurrents present in even the most unremarkable moments in life, giving tribute to women and the essence of their spirit that is eternal.

Studio of the Arts (sota) opens it's doors to the city of Annapolis with it's first social and art exhibition.
Studio of the Arts’ Opening Exhibition features a selection of works by several artists in a variety of media. As the very first exhibition to take place in the SOTA Gallery, the artists featured are all conne...cted to the artspace through community relationships. The exhibition is juried, so although the work is diverse in content and medium, works were hand-selected for the event. Chosen artworks include drawings, paintings, photography, film, printmaking, sculpture, and installation.
