From what I've heard to be an au pair in the States you have to go through a company or find a family that will sign up with a company. They are the ones that give you sponsorship forms that let you get your J1 visa as an au pair. I think Canada and Europe are different as you don't necessarily have an au pair visa. Maybe someone from cc can confirm this??

the J1 visa is a student visa that is why we have to do credits. Im not sure about other countries but if you want to be a nanny or au pair in the usa you need to come through a company otherwise you will be working illegally.
