"The complexity behind what appears to be a simple directional sign is astounding. Truly design for the people, wayfinding systems help us navigate through our world. Part primer, part design resource, the latest from the Design Briefs series concisely covers the immense and wildly va...rying field of, as the subtitle says, information design for public spaces. Calling on his more than 30 years of experience, Gibson covers the basics of the discipline, the planning for and design of wayfinding systems, as well as code requirements."Read More

On 2/25/09, I spoke at the SEGD event “Extraordinary Collaboration: Charlotte Uptown Wayfinding Program From Vision to Implementation."
My fellow panelists included Howard Landers, project leader and consultant with the Charlotte Department of Transportation, engineers Chuck Johnson of HNTB, and Kelly VanPatten of Kiml...ey Horn, and sign fabricator John Cox of Signs Etc.
The project is a fascinating one, integrating all of the directional signs in the region, from highways to city streets to parking, providing coordinated vehicular and pedestrian signage for those visiting the vibrant, evolving Uptown area of Charlotte. We had a chance to share with the local SEGD community the planing and design necessary to create this comprehensive signage program. A lively discussion was followed by a book signing, my first.
