Andrew explains why he can't quit Sarah: It's because of John McCain, the Republican establishment and the mainstream media. What happened last fall was a warning sign to all of us about how corrupt and cynical the GOP, McCain and the MSM are...

The dudes who penned the Transformers script are backing away from the minstrelbots:Cole: I heard that the gold tooth was Michael Bay's idea, but do you have any response to those who found The Twins offensive? Orci: Number one, we sympathize. Yes, the gold tooth was not in the script, that's true...

I was thinking about this "meritocratic vs. democratic" notion this morning, and I think I hit upon a significant divide in how I'm processing things, and how many of my readers are processing things. The fact of the matter is simple---I am black...

I meant to say how much I loved The Fog of War, the other day. Great flick. Also, people should check out this Fresh Air interview with McNamara and Errol Morris, who did Fog Of War.

Steve Benen notes that Sarah Palin's seemingly disastrous withdrawal, isn't really seen that way among the rank and file:Among Republican voters, even now, 71% would be likely to vote for her for President of the United States.Inexplicably quitting, for less-than-clear reasons, has managed to...

I know this because Mika Brezinski told me. I don't think there's anything serious to address in her point. There are a lot of hours to fill. Gotta say something. One interesting notion is that we're seeing a kind of mirror-image of the Left in the 60s and 70s...

Courtesy of comments, Democracy In America gets at something I missed in Ross's column. Here's Ross:Palin's popularity has as much to do with class as it does with ideology. In this sense, she really is the perfect foil for Barack Obama...

That's they name they gave him back in college, maybe high school. When I was a freshman at Howard, he was in his last year at Alcorn, and man he used to give the black colleges hell...

I wrote a long post on Sarah Palin, and then deleted it. I was overthinking. Here is what must be said-- Sarah Palin is deeply ignorant. She actually sounded worse, unedited and uninterrupted, than when she was under the withering fire of Katie Couric...

Anyone read this one? I bought it a couple weeks ago. Like most lefties, I read the Howard Zinn original in college. It changed my life, because before then I had this notion that only black people struggled. I knew a bit about women's suffrage, but very little about the labor movement...

[Gautham Nagesh]While I'm glad I got the chance to discuss how the recession has disproportionately affected places like my hometown in Michigan, I wanted to end my guest blogging tenure on a more optimistic note...

{Dwayne Betts}It's been a pleasure blogging here for the past week. The commenters here are intelligent and just crazy enough to make everything interesting. All that is to say my week has been a dope one. I learned that this blogging thing ain't no joke...

[A. Serwer] This has been a crazy week for me, blogging here, at TAPPED, and working on some other long-form stuff for the Prospect. I agreed to do it, basically, because TNC has been one of my heroes ever since I read this...

[A. Serwer] When TNC first asked me to guest-blog, I thought I was going to be doing a lot more posts on comic books and video games then I ended up doing as a result of everything that's happened this week....

The Aspen Ideas Festival begins with a few of the invited guests standing up to propose a "Idea" which they think would move the country forward. Wisconsin GOP Rep. Paul Ryan, was one of the guest invited to speak this year. His idea was to attack the deficit, and not pass on debt to our kids...

[Alyssa Rosenberg]Ariel Levy's portrait of Nora Ephron as a romantic and a food-lover in this week's New Yorker is great, and you should go read it (only an abstract is online, for now, or I'd link). But I don't actually want to talk about Nora Ephron...

[Dwayne Betts]You can't live in DC and not be impressed, on some level, by Councilman Marion Barry's political staying power. And if you asked about the source of that power, you would probably get ten different answers from ten different people...

[Alyssa Rosenberg]The day job's got me running all over Baltimore today. But I went to a midnight showing "Public Enemies" yesterday, and while I've got a piece on it forthcoming so I won't say much here, it reminded me of how much I love David Wagoner's poem, "The Shooting of John Dillinger...

[A. Serwer] So like Ta-Nehisi, I've been pretty frustrated with the way that many on the left have simply embraced the idea that black people are standing in the way of marriage equality...

It's been an education to watch the insidious efforts to blame this country's trenchant homophobia on roughly 13 percent of its population run up against a wall of facts--and plow right through them:In conversations with gay activists on both coasts last week, I heard several theories as to why...

This post has to me made every few months. I guess now is as a good a time as any. We've gotten quite a few new commenters, in the wake of Michael Jackson's death. We've also got some new people responding to our guest bloggers...

[Dwayne Betts]Since the Ricci opinion came out, it seems only right to talk about two cases that will be before the court soon. The issue of JLWOP will come before the Supreme Court soon - law firms all over the country are preparing amicus briefs in the effort to sway the courts one way or the...

while it's true that the prospect of prison (or other sorts of punishment) is not a deterrent for adolescents, our twisted criminal "justice" system is evidence that it's not much of a deterrent for ANYBODY. if it were, there wouldn't be any crime at all in the US, being that we have more people in prison than anybody else, and it's easier to end ... Read Moreup in prison here than in almost any other so-called civilized nation. if the idea of prison deterred anybody from doing anything, this country would read like a brady bunch rerun. but no, our crime rates are much higher than the crime rates in nations which imprison a much smaller percentage of their citizens.
prison is not a deterrent but a breeding ground, and the more people that are needlessly twisted by absurdly long stays in our absurdly horrendous prisons the more crime we are going to have. period.

Tim at 9:12am June 30
adult sentencing seems to be more a knee-jerk reaction to mollify the demands of the public. Prison has become an industry and offenders are just product so it's in the justice systems best interest to keep pumping out as much product as possible - creating more jobs and justifying ever increasing budgets. However this is extremely short sighted in... Read More that these same resources could be applied to rehabilitate and counsel young offenders and giving them a comprehensive punishment for their crimes, with the goal being that they won't re-offend. I agree with Jackie, prison is not a deterrent but I that's because the current system is set up to practically encourage second offensives!
On the flip side you always hear about the extreme case of the 13 year old who kills 4 people or what not, so there has to be some room for exceptions. If someone takes a life, not by accident but with intent, does it matter how old they are when determining punishment?

[A. Serwer] Hey ya'll, this is Adam. You guys might know me from such blogs as TAPPED and Jack and Jill Politics. I'm honored to be guest-blogging for TNC, and I'll try my best, along with the others, to help keep this blog interesting in his absence. I don't usually write about sports...

[Alyssa Rosenberg]I'm having trouble embedding it, but seriously, go watch Steve Martin parodying the Billie Jean video. If Michael's gift was his grace, Martin's is his awkwardness, and his utter lack of fear in exploiting it for our pleasure...

{Dwayne Betts}The show came on at 8pm and Jamie Fox needed to be bleeped out four times in the first ten minutes. Then, he performed Blame It On The Alcohol while climbing out of a giant bottle of alcohol. T Pain had on a chain that said "Big Ass Chain."And then, if you watched more than thirty...

[Alyssa Rosenberg]Many thanks to Ta-Nehisi for letting me hang out here this week and represent the ladies...

At some point I'll read the Times Magazine's profile chronicling "The Fall Of The Black Middle Class." But it's hard to escape the sense that, by the lights of most mainstream media coverage, there really isn't much of a Black Middle Class. It all feels anticlimactic...

i am really sorry but i don't know you and not sure how you got on my facebook, i would like to stop our unintended correspondence but not sure how to do it

Commenter Thefoulness hits on what will likely become a common refrain: I gotta object to all this...love for the man. I dig the music as much as anybody, and long live the music, but as for the man, good riddance. T Am I wrong to say you're all weeping over a child molester...

Krista at 4:15pm June 26
Like T said. sometimes awful people do beautiful things, and sometimes beautiful people do awful things. And sometimes people are just people, flawed, and in need, but people just the same. Forgiveness is sometimes what allows that beauty to shine forth.. and God will always have the final say.

Here's Adam Serwer's latest on gay marriage in D.C. He makes the important point that anti-gay marriage campaigns in the black community, have at once exploited homophobia and racial prejudice...

OK, time for my "You kids get off my lawn!" moment. I mean seriously, who the eff are Spencer and Heidi? I now know, thanks to my readers, who Jon and Kate are. (They're getting divorced and apparently Jon is moving to New York! Holla at a playa when you see me in them streets!...
Robert at 7:13am June 25
I would also consider the category "train wreck famous". People who make such bad choices (whether consistently or in a single epic sweep) that the public is drawn to them. There is always the silent comment "there but for the grace of impulse control go I..."

Janice at 6:47pm June 26
I blame you for making me go find a YouTube reference for "Holla At a Playa," TNC, and now it's going to be stuck in my head forever.

I keep wondering whether the GOP will recalibrate its relationship with the religious right. Cutting them off would be suicide. It also would be passing the bunk. The problem is conservative sanctimony, and its true that you see it in New Gingrich carrying the mantle for traditional family...

It won't do. That answer on black unemployment was awful. I'm out of my realm here, and I'm not sure what should be done. Economics isn't my area. But Obama's basic position seems to be that government really has no active role in rectifying racial disparities...

Live, if you can't see it on TVVisit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy

It needs to be said that I think Martin Luther King--flaws and all--is a hero. I right write with the thought that most people reading this are following the conversation, and are familiar with the blog. That isn't obviously the case. The problem with thinking out loud, is that people hear you...

Buchanan attacks Sonia Sotomayor for trying to perfect her English. He does this while attending an "English only"conference. Where the banner misspelled "conference." Unbelievable...

Of the many reckonings that black people of honest political consciousness must endure, the appointment with black slavery is the most agonizing...

Earlon at 10:47am June 18
Glad to find you on FB. Your blog is one of the best ones out there. This post was outstanding.

I literally just finished Battle Cry Of Freedom. Incredible book. Perhaps the best I've ever read. The story of the escaped slave, who joins the Union Army, encounters his master and says, "Howdy Massa. Bottom rail on top, this time" is such a lovely end. More coming. I'm working now.

Family commitments are bearing down. Blogging will commence by early afternoon. Talk amongst yourselves for a bit.

Nothing ever matters: Captain America is rising from the grave. The Marvel Comics superhero returns for the five-part series "Captain America Reborn," beginning July 1.But Marvel won't disclose how he rises from the dead...

George Packer would like to see Obama, and his team, saying something more about Iran:With riot police and armed militiamen beating and, in a few reported cases, killing unarmed demonstrators in the streets of Iran's cities, for the Obama Administration to continue parsing equivocal phrases serves...

Andrew responds to Stephen Hayes' suggestion that Obama give a speech in support of the people of Iran:No! That is the last thing he should do. He should stay out of this as much as possible. This is not about us. It's about them...

Why would Joan Walsh go on O'Reilly? UPDATE: Per comments. Walsh explains:I was surprised when so many people I respect told me not to appear on "The O'Reilly Factor." I'd attacked Bill O'Reilly for his jihad against Dr...

Sorry to leave you guys like this after such an emotional week--scroll down if you missed it. I'm on the move today in search of bigger and better stories. Mind the store while I'm out. Consider this your open thread. Guard it with your life. Or at least your virtual life.

I'm just going to be honest and say I didn't expect this:Asked if he had spoken to the president, Wright said: "Them Jews aren't going to let him talk to me...

Read Mark Blumenthal's recollection of his last visit to the Holocaust Museum with his father. Read the update too. It's all bracing. I haven't said much more about this, because I haven't quite figured out where to go.

Jelani ponders a Kennedy-Obama comparison, but, as he says, not in a good way: It is far too early to make such assessments of President Obama, but there is a disturbing parallel...

This: Brooks point is hilariously historically naive, and it must be intentional. If only Sotomayor had had the good fortune to attend Princeton in the decades that Princeton DID NOT ADMIT ANY WOMEN AT ALL, she would have certainly found it welcoming of all races and genders...

I briefly alluded to this yesterday, but it's worth emphasizing that a large measure of my power and privilege critique of conservatives, comes from my identity...

Nothing to see here. Also, what the hell happened to Jeremy Shockey? Also, who the hell are John and Kate?

One of my readers was kind enough to recommend this free series of lectures by historian David Blight at Yale. Pretty fascinating stuff, and great listening material for those hours when you're, like me, leveling up a Warlock alt...

One last thought on this "Jews Gone Wild tape." This sentiment from Jeff...Max Blumenthal goes to downtown Jerusalem and prompts drunk American Jewish kids to say horrible things about Obama...

From the Washington Post:The man charged with murdering a high-profile abortion doctor claimed from his jail cell Sunday that similar violence was planned around the nation for as long as the procedure remained legal, a threat that comes days after a federal investigation launched into his...

Jerry Jones just courts the drama. It's the hardest thing about being a Cowboys fan:The Cowboys released Pacman Jones in February...

Yglesias assesses the opposition to Obama's Cairo speech, and likes the line-up:Mark Kleiman: "Hezbollah, Hamas, the Muslim Brotherhood, John Bolton, Hugh Hewitt, and the Republican Jewish Coalition, and John Boehner all disliked the President's speech."And, look, it's no coincidence...

Gawker on the Blumenthal video:Blumenthal, an American documentary film director and writer, is certainly right, the video is shocking, but not so much for what is said, though it's all definitely quite jarring to hear, but more for who is saying it...

My own views on abortion are anchored mostly in my experience with pregnancy. I was a doting partner, but those nine months made it abundantly clear that my burden was not Kenyatta's burden...

Black suspect found dead in his cell. No charges. Here's the explanation:Initially, investigators thought Ramon Davis, then a jail officer, found White on the floor of his cell, unresponsive, about 10:30 a.m. on a Sunday...

Dave Weigel does the knowledge on Tom Tancredo, Pat Buchanan and the racist thug who they've both sponsored. Attacking a black woman in Georgetown and calling her a nigger. What a coward. Buchanan himself is a loathsome figure. One reason, I'm glad that I'm not in D.C...

They are prodigious: So far, Sharpton has been to the White House more times, and for more close-up conversations with Obama, than the leaders of other long-established civil rights organizations like the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Urban League...

I'd forgotten about this piece in SI, but I remembered it when a commenter referred me over that way. This piece came out in 96, and is one the big reasons I that Thrilla In Manila felt a little stale to me. It's really well reported. Here's an interesting post-Manila nugget...

A friendly e-mailer pulled together some GSS data on blacks and Jews, and how we feel about marrying each other. 19 percent of blacks "oppose" or "strongly oppose" a relative marrying someone Jewish, while 31 percent favor or "favor" or "strongly favor" the unions...

I've had a few e-mailers and commenters make the following point: I strongly suspect that the majority of the 38% of Jews who oppose their relatives marrying blacks do so not because of antipathy toward black people, but because most blacks aren't Jewish...

Damon Linker has a question:If abortion truly is what the pro-life movement says it is -- if it is the infliction of deadly violence against an innocent and defenseless human being -- then doesn't morality demand that pro-lifers act in any way they can to stop this violence...

HBO's new sports documentary Thrilla In Manila has been praised as a much needed corrective to the mythology of Muhammad Ali. But I watched this weekend and came away feeling like Joe Frazier got the bad end of this one. Again...

Courtesy of Andrew, I just read that abortion doctor George Tiller was murdered inside his church this morning. This was the second time he'd been shot...

Liberals have, for decades, taken shots for being political correct, for being sensitive, and for trying to "understand" people who are different from them. It's been a long road since the 60s. I don't know how I feel about Affirmative Action, these days...

So that's from a couple of rural/small town white folks in a very Republican county, for what it's worth.
