Tails of the Tundra Siberian Husky Rescue Q: Is it a good idea to but a pet as a gift for someone else? A: You mean well, but owners choose one dog over another for very personal reasons, and they should be allowed to have a say in the pet who will become a part of their lives for many years.

In our home our sibes are our children. They just happen to have fur. They have feelings and emotions just like us.I can't see how anyone could give any dog as a gift.

Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon will be there; The children were nestled all snug in their beds. With no thought of the dog filling their head...

Tails of the Tundra Siberian Husky Rescue
Canine Lyme Disease - It IS a Serious Disease and not all vet's take it as seriously as they should! Tails of the Tundra's current protocol requires that all of our foster dogs undergo the lyme snap test, and if they are positive at all, we then have the Lyme Quantitative C6 Antibody Test done to see if the dog has an... active disease present. Dog's showing no signs of the disease are NOT necessarily safe!Read More

Fabulous! As an owner of a rescued Sibe who was treated for Lyme Disease prior to adoption, I know how serious it can be. It wasn't caught as early as it could have been and Dakota suffers from chronic arthritis as a result. Sometimes his body can't keep up with his spirit!

(From Diana) Leika was diagnosed with Kidney Failure from Lyme's Disease. "Lyme Nephritis" is not a common outcome, but it is fatal. At about 4 1/2 yrs old now, Leika will not live a normal life span (few months to a year or so?)

Vets will often recommend not treating a symptom free dog. This can be a fatal mistake. Get the C6 done and treat if necessary as shown by this test. If you're interested in learning more, sign up for the Tick-L listserv.

Heather Gargan Is it normal for a Husky to kill and defeather birds?

I can't say for sure, Heather. But my husky has a strong hunting instinct. Even though I live in a suburban area in a townhouse complex, my husky has captured (and brought inside for me - yuk), shrews, field mice and birds from our little yard. And we're still working on her strong drive to go after rabbits when we're out walking (on a leash). ... ... Read MoreRead MoreThey make her nuts and her hunting drive goes into overdrive. I did get her past getting excited about deer and we can pass them calmly now. Took a long time. I have 2 indoor cats who were here long before her. They live upstairs now and the dogs live downstairs. Because of her strong hunt drive, I wouldn't trust her not to hurt them. My mixed breed is learning to tolerate them. This is the first time that I've had to keep my dogs and cats separated, even when I had an aggressive 90 lb. boxer. So my guess is that huskies have a pretty strong prey drive.

Siberians are known for their high prey drives. Having said that.. they can learn to live peacefully with cats. But it does take work AND just because they learn to become okay with the inside cat doesn't mean they will be good with the stray cat entering the yard.
