Without Pete Seeger, American folk music might be stuck on dusty 45s and passed down only by a fortunate few. But Seeger, along with luminaries like Woody Guthrie, spread messages of peace and equality to the masses. ...

We had a great time last Friday night with Kate Charnock at the Art Spring store operated by Pyramid Atlantic in downtown Silver Spring. It was too quiet indoors, so Kate stepped outside and serenaded passersby for more than an hour...

Takoma Park Folk Festival (TPFF) MUSIC & DANCE
Enjoy music and dance from around the world on seven stages. Some performances are designed for audience participation, particularly our dance workshops, the Seventh Heaven stage, and the many activities at and surrounding our Children's stage.

CHILDREN'S ACTIVITIES
Visit the Grassy Nook Stage for activities... designed for children of all ages — folksingers, interactive musical games and dancing, storytelling, and participatory music-making. Nearby are children's homemade games provided by Cub Scout Pack 33 — our thanks for their participation. Enjoy!

JURIED CRAFTS SHOW & SALE
The Festival's juried crafts show showcases the diverse talents of the many artisans and craftspeople who live in Takoma Park and the region. Visit their booths to experience - and buy! - their varied and innovative creations. A juried selection process ensures the highest quality in handcrafted items.

COMMUNITY TABLES
Around the grounds you will see a wide variety of community groups who rent table space to distribute literature and solicit new members and donations. We encourage you to learn about the many activities taking place in and around Takoma Park by visiting the community-tables area. Space is allocated to non-profit groups for a nominal fee.

FOOD
Selected vendors are allocated space to sell food that represents several ethnic cuisines and provides fun, inexpensive options for the entire family. Students from Takoma Park Middle School will be selling water and soft drinks at the back of the school overlooking the Field Stage and near the Grassy Nook children's area.

ACCESSIBILITY
The Festival strives to make our activities accessible to people with disabilities.
* All of our indoor stages and most outdoor activities will be accessible.
* Limited handicapped parking at Takoma Park Middle School site (10-15 spaces) and handicap-accessible shuttle bus service from off-site free parking lots.
* Many performances are signed for the hearing-impaired

ABOUT YOUR PETS...
We love animals too! But because of the hazards of possible bites, fights and droppings, please leave your pet at home on the day of the Festival.

Takoma Park Folk Festival (TPFF) The Takoma Park Folk Festival has teamed up with Pyramid Atlantic -- the hottest art gallery and store in Silver Spring -- to produce three free concerts in the next few weeks.

Each of these great performers will be on-stage at the Folk Festival on Sunday, September 13, but you can enjoy sneak previews at Pyramid's sto...re in Silver Spring.

Call Pyramid at (301) 608-9101 for directions. All shows are 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Friday, August 28, it's Kate Charnock. With a penchant for poetic lyrics and heartfelt melodies, Kate brings influences as diverse as Rosie Thomas, The Decemberists, Laura Veirs, Ani Difranco, and Eisley.

Friday, September 4, it's Steven Gellman, who has garnered critical acclaim across the country and was nominated for four Washington Area Music Association Awards and The Gay/Lesbian American Music Awards "Debut Album of the Year." Steven's music blends emotion and storytelling in a warm package.

Friday, September 11, Tom O'Connor will bring music that he describes as an "organic blend between pop, rock, folk, country, reggae and bluegrass." Praise from some critics have compared Tom to the solo acoustic work of Eric Clapton.

We look forward to seeing you at Pyramid Atlantic and at the Folk Festival!

Takoma Park Folk Festival (TPFF) The Takoma Park Folk Festival is holding a fundraiser at Mark’s Kitchen in Takoma Park on August 18. Mark is generously offering us a significant percentage of whatever is purchased and eaten or drunk in the restaurant FROM NOON UNTIL CLOSING.

Mark’s provides friendly service and a menu that pleases everyone. The earl...ier you come, the better, since the restaurant tends to fill up at dinner time.

Since the Folk Festival is run by volunteers, these fundraisers help to defray our expenses. We appreciate your willingness to come and help us out and look forward to seeing you.

Festival committee members will be at the restaurant, as well, selling festival T-shirts and signing up volunteers.

Mark’s Kitchen is located at 7006 Carroll Avenue, Takoma Park, Maryland 20912. You haven't really been to Takoma Park until you've been to Mark's Kitchen. Since 1989, owner Mark Choe has been providing the Takoma Park neighborhood with outstanding American and Asian specialties in a wonderfully informal and relaxed environment where you can get together with old friends and you can easily meet new ones.

With an unusually large number of vegetarian choices (and with most of these choices vegan) and with an equally large number of meat and fish dishes, the menu at this full-service restaurant is as diverse as the Takoma Park neighborhood.

To quote one enthusiastic restaurant reviewer, "Mark's Kitchen is a place where vegetarians and carnivores can dine together without losing respect for one another."

Greetings from the Far Coast (Maui's South Shore) where we also have a parade on the Fourth built around the historical upcountry cowboy (paniolo in Hawaiian) culture. But, sadly no fireworks near where we live now; up until 2005 we would have joined everyone on the slope by the Middle School. And I'll also miss working on TPFF parking in our old Hodges Heights neighborhood.
