Tales of the New Jersey Shore

Tales of the New Jersey Shore How about this boardwalk entrance to George Tilyou's Steeplechase Pier in Atlantic City.
Looks like fun.

Anita Collins

Anita Collins Anyone recall the Yankee Clipper and Sand Bar Pub in Sea Girt? We moved from Jersey about 15 years ago and I still miss the shore. I truely "grew up" in Jersey and will always love it with all my heart!!

Tales of the New Jersey Shore

Tales of the New Jersey Shore All fans of the Jersey Shore and especially Atlantic City are fortunate that in the early 20th century the Maxwell Sign Company took high quality, large format, black and white images of their signs along the Asbury and AC boardwalks.
While their goal was their signs they captured amazing images of life on the boardwalk back in the day.

Victoria Just what is sounds like :) A giant wheel that totals strangers would ride until it spun them in a mass of humanity on the floor. Just one of his "subtle" ways to help the sexes intermingle and meet in an era that frowned upon it.

Another page from the gem of a booklet I just found on Cape May - ( circa 1910 )
Think we should bring back "Hydrangea Day."
Many visitors do not realize that Cape May is on the mainland so the foliage is more representative of a country town and less of a barrier sand resort like resort's further north.
BTW...before a c...entury of hurricanes took their toll the town was known for streets with trees that dwarf the current ones. Would love to have seen them in person.Read More

Ah, hydrangeas, one of my favorites! They love a little sand & a nice breeze...perfect for down the shore.

Frances Lynn Sally Galbraith

Frances Lynn Sally Galbraith Cape May is my home in the summer, but I have fond memories of Wildwood, Ship Bottom and Atlantic City from my childhood. Cape May is akin to Key West and is "south " of the Mason-Dixon line, so now I'm an honorary Southerner...

Laura Lynn Griffin

Laura Lynn Griffin I worked many summers selling badges to "the bennies" on the Mmanasquan beach! What a way to spend a summer - sunning by day and partying by night with the lifeguards! I miss most the pork roll sandwiches at the Inlet and riding my bicycle everywhere! One summer I worked at Evelyn's Seafood Rstaurant and got to serve Meryl Streep!

On the Asbury Park Boardwalk there was Taylor Pork Roll(tasty). I only had it once when my boyfriend wanted me to try it. So many other things come to mind, ice cream mmmm and salt water taffy on the stretching machine. Did any one go through the spooky house or the tunnel of love? I loved standing over the ocean o...utside Convention Hall. Bruce gets ready for his tours there and I saw Janis Joplin on that stage. When i was in grammar school it was a skating rink. So much fun!Read More

I served on the Cape May HPC ( Historical Preservation Commission ) for 2 years. Had to resign due to time constraints and travel from North Jersey to CM during the winter months.
The HPC regulates all outside construction, improvement so the town maintains its Historic Landmark status. You cannot please everyone. Some commissioners carry it ... Read Morebeyond reason such as the time a large B&B wanted to replace their slate roof that was leaking. The house was so tall you would have to use a cherry-picker to really see it. I suggested a new product-rubberized imitation slate-25 year warranty - that looks exactly like the real thing. They blew it off, turned the guy down and I believe the inn went up for sale. On the other hand we had to stop people that wanted to install vinyl siding. It is not a town to own a home if you are looking for maintenance free living :) We paint our cottage every 2-4 years. Also, large developers use their pull to get away with things. It is a constant battle but was worth it to keep Cape May a gem.

Sounds like a common story when trying to please everyone
I live in Colorado now and have tried to please both the hysterical society as they are fondly called here, and the investors. Common sense can go a long way in these cases but unfortunately many who find themselves in positions of some authority seem to leave leave their common sense at the door and carry their huge egos right in and muck things up. Thanks for the story ~
