Tampa Independent Business Alliance (TIBA) Here's the reply from Carla Jimenez to today's St Pete Times column asking Santa for jobs:
Unless the gifts under the Christmas tree are purchased with dollars spent locally, asking Santa for more jobs is hypocritical. With $50 spent at a locally owned independent business, $22.50 stays here; with $50 spent at a nationa...l chain, $6.50 stays here; with $50 spent online with no sales tax collected, $0.00 stays here. That adds up to a lot of jobs, as well as a lot of schools and parks and fire engines - and a lot more dollars available for giving to family, friends, and our neediest neighbors. Santa knows if you've been good or bad, so do the math and be good for goodness sake...

Thanks for posting Roy's comments (And we all celebrate Carla). I want to encourage everyone to think beyond restaurant, groceries & gifts. Are your accountants, lawyers, print shops, mechanics, banks ...all independents? And a subject near and dear to my heart, is your painter using paint from an independent paint store? There are very few of us ... See Morestill around that are not franchises or company owned. After 76 years we have seen a lot of independent paint stores fall and more die everyday. Two closed in Tampa this month. Tanner Paint is a proud member of TIBA and encourage you to reclaim your community by supporting local first.

Tampa Independent Business Alliance (TIBA) Don't be brainwashed with local-washing! Here's another article from fearless watchdog Stacy Mitchell on attempts by national chains to co-opt the growing localism movement with phony fronts.
