Php14 million donation from Spain’s Fundacion MAPFRE used to provide “starter kits” to typhoon victims in provinces
Volunteers repack relief goods in preparation for coming typhoons
(Manila, Philippines, November 6, 2009) – As the Philippines braces for more typhoons for the remaining months of the year, Mapfre Insular c...ontinues its relief operations as volunteer employees distribute “starter kits” to typhoon-affected areas in Pangasinan and La Union.
Mapfre Insular, the leading non-life insurance provider in the country, is allocating part of its Php14 million donation from its shareholder, Fundación Mapfre, for the kits.
An estimated 4,500 families in Calamba and Muntinlupa have already received about 4,500 bags of relief goods that contain plates, cups, utensils, mats, blankets, bath towels, and other home essentials aside from food and water supplies.
Over 100 employees and agents of Mapfre Insular have volunteered to repack and distribute the starter kits for families in the affected areas in Muntinlupa and Calamba. The goal of these kits is to help affected individuals and families rebuild their lives and look beyond the devastation caused by the typhoon.
“Everyday, we have about 20 employees from our Metro Manila branches going to Manila to sort the materials for the relief operations and put each of them in large plastic sacks so every family could get an ample amount of the basic necessities like food, clothing, toiletries, and sleeping utilities. One bag is good enough for one family,” Team Leader and Accounting Specialist Christine Cristobal said.
The employees will repack goods at St. Paul Manila until November 6. Relief operations are expected to end by November 9 to give way to the rehabilitation operations in the affected areas, where employee-volunteers will help clean up and restore roads and facilities in the areas
According to Vice President Rolan Dela Vega, the new priority areas in NASSA-Caritas' list are Pangasinan and La Union, which were devastated by typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng.
There are currently 6,000 bags ready for distribution. About 2,000 bags will be distributed in Muntinlupa while the 4,000 remaining bags are reserved for allotment in other affected areas listed in the priority list.
“As an insurance company, Mapfre Insular is aware of the importance of getting people back on their feet. This is part of our core service as an insurance provider and also as Filipinos to help and serve our fellowmen during this most challenging time,” Dela Vega said. “We hope these starter kits will enable a number of families to go on with their lives and move forward after surviving the aftermath of the calamities,” he added.
