If anything, China's economic success in recent years has done a lot to undermine 'convergence' theory. Capitalism can succeed quite nicely and happily with no democracy whatsoever in place to moderate it; that much is clear. Vietnam looks set to take a comparable route.

It expanded the U.S. military's reach abroad, further militarized American society and public culture, gutted civil liberties, and openly condoned torture. Not exactly congruent with "freedom", IMO.
