| Company Overview: | The Actors' Gang is one of Los Angeles' most enduring theatre ensembles. Founded in 1981 by a group of renegade theatre artists, the Gang's mission is to create bold, original works for the stage and daring reinterpretations of the classics. Our work is raw, immediate, socially minded, and crafted with the highest artistic standards. | Mission: | Believing the education of children and youth in the performing arts builds foundations for appreciation of the theater and understanding of the social issues that the theater addresses, the Gang provides various programs that target young people of all ages and abilities. The goal of the company’s education program is to connect the artistic work of The Actors’ Gang with the lives of young people and to contribute to student learning through interdisciplinary teaching with theatre arts. In addition, the Gang serves as an education resource and provides teachers with strategies for relating the artistic work of the theatre to the school curriculum. To support these goals the company has developed the following programs: Artist Residency/Performance with grade school students, Youth Mentorship Project for at-risk elementary and high school students, the Student Matinee Series and the Residency with Culver City High School Performing Arts Academy. Working with the Los Angeles Unified School District, the programs use theatre as a catalyst for students to learn about community building, self-expression and empowerment. These community-based programs have ensured a constructive and informative relationship with our community, its leaders and its citizens. |
| Products: | The Style The Actors’ Gang is well known for its original acting method, referred to as The Style, a precise technique brought to The Actors’ Gang by Georges Bigot and the Theatre du Soleil. This is a unique melding of the broad physicality of Commedia dell’ Arte and the intense disciplined use of heightened emotion. This investment, based in truth, is focused in four specific states - happiness, sadness, fear and anger. Erasing the concept of a fourth wall, performers connect directly with audience members, for the sole purpose of sharing these moments in real time. The goal is to bring your audience on a journey, that they might be transformed. This is how we tell our stories. Enhancing this process, are larger than life disciplines such as mask work, puppetry, movement and music. The development process begins with a series of workshops whereby Gang Members begin by juxtaposing The Style onto source material. In keeping with commedia tradition, for example, the actors develop a full image. Makeup and costumes for the characters are made specific before the interior characterization work begins. The Gang encourages its members to keep the barriers between disciplines as low as possible. Designers attend these workshops and rehearsals, sharing in the creative process. The result is a truly organic collaboration. |
