The Algarve Resident A marketing campaign for a northern Portuguese city’s bid to become European Capital of Culture 2012 has stopped using billboards of an empty Algarve beach. The advertisements promoting Guimarães attracted much criticism from Algarve tourism chiefs, including AHETA president Elidérico Viegas (see Algarve Resident Septe...mber 3 edition). Now, according to Cidade de Guimarães Foundation spokesman Cristina Azevedo, the posters which caused such a storm will not be used anymore. She said: “It was never our intention to belittle the Algarve. We only resorted to irony that is usual in publicity campaigns. The billboards were only removed because this first phase of the campaign ended on August 31.”

Re: A new vision for retirement
(article posted on www.algarveresident.com 27-Aug-2010)
After reading this article, I was saddened by the lack of insight that appears to be sweeping across the Algarve, in terms of new property developments and resorts. The idea of retiring to a village full of old people is not somethin...g that actually appeals to old people.
Following a research study that my company carried out a few years ago, it is clear that what people want is actually very different from what property developers and architects think they want. Choice is a matter of individuality, rather than a result of a spread sheet. What old people really want is to be around people of all ages and in particular, children. Can't we see developments based on research and inquiry, rather than assumptions?

The Algarve Resident TOP WINE: Two Algarve wineries took the accolade of Best Wine of the Algarve 2010 after judges were unable to place one above the other during the competition held at Fatacil in Lagoa. The Grace Touriga Nacional 2008 from the Quinta dos Vales winery and the Vida Nova Rosé 2009 from the Adega do Cantor winery both pick...ed up the award for the best wine of 2010 during the third Algarve wine competition on August 24.

TOURISM SPAT: Algarve tourism chief Nuno Aires has slammed the northern Portuguese city of Guimarães for its use of an image of an empty Algarve beach in its campaign to become the European Capital of Culture in 2012. The campaign uses billboards depicting a beach full of parasols and sun loungers, but completely devoi...d of people with the text saying: “Algarve Coast, 11.30am, August 2, 2012.” Nuno Aires said: “This campaign is in very bad taste. Guimarães has so many interesting places to promote. It is totally unnecessary to use a beach in the Algarve.”

The Algarve Resident CLIFF’S FIRST CRUSH: Partners of the Adega do Cantor winery near Guia were on hand as the first grapes of the year were ceremoniously loaded into crushing machinery at the boutique winery on August 20. Nigel and Max Birch were joined by Sir Cliff Richard, who told the Algarve Resident: “When we first began producing wi...ne here the Algarve had a bad reputation. I remember reading that wine here was produced by locals as “bottled headaches for the tourists” but thanks to this winery, and the new ones that have emerged recently, I think this perception is changing.” See this week’s Algarve Resident for the full story – www.algarveresident.com.

The Barlavento Hospital’s campaign, 5 star Algarve for 5 Euros, asks people who have enjoyed “the glamour, the beauty, the sun and the sea of the Algarve” to say a ...thank you to the residents of the Algarve by donating five Euros to help fund the purchasing of mobility equipment, including wheelchairs and crutches.
