The Alliance for African Assistance
During the last 20 years, The Alliance for African Assistance has resettled thousands of refugees from around the world. These refugees represent the struggles that our world has endured and the determination and dedication to create change and success from these struggles.
The Alliance for African Assistance cordially... invites you to their 8th Annual World Refugee Day Breakfast on June 20, 2009 at the La Jolla Presbyterian Church from 9am to 11am.
In 2000, the United Nations General Assembly designated June 20th as World Refugee Day, a day in which people and organizations around the world focus on raising awareness about the fundamental need for protection of all forcibly displaced people. The Office of Refugee Resettlement and the United Nations explains that,
In order to be designated a refugee, people must have a well-founded fear of persecution in their country of origin because of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality, and is unable to or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country. Refugees legally enter the United States in search of freedom, peace, and opportunity for themselves and their families.
The refugee population in San Diego typically arrive from their country of origin with no more than the clothes they wear and a United Nations document bag representing the new life they are about to begin. It is more common than not that they have spent years moving from place to place or confined within the walls of overcrowded and under supplied refugee camps. Many have been victimized beyond what we could imagine and yet there remains a spark of hope for future dreams and successes in their lives.
Established in 1989, The Alliance for African Assistance-a not for profit, multi-cultural and multi-linguistic, voluntary resettlement agency celebrates 20 years of successful resettlements and outreach in the San Diego area. The grassroots initiative of The Alliance for African Assistance of refugees supporting refugees has evolved into a full-service, culturally competent organization recognized as a leader in providing assistance to many of San Diego’s most underserved communities.
If you would like to join the celebration of World Refugee Day 2009 or to sponsor a refugee, please contact Barbara Hanson for reservations at 619-286-9052, Ext. 230.
The cost is $35.00 per person and proceeds will go to helping the refugee community in San Diego.
If you ar interested in sponsoring a refugee or a table to 10 refugees, please make checks payable to:
