Curator Tim B. Wride will take a rollicking, no-holds-ba...rred look at the photographers and the ideas behind his favorite images in the Art of Photography Show 2009. Be forewarned, he is not one to mince words. You will get his honest, though always constructive, opinions about the images and the art: good, bad and ugly.
Tim will share his process of researching artists and decision-making insights about what makes art worth investing in. This will be a valuable exercise for both collectors and artists.
Tim B. Wride is the founding Executive Director of the No Strings Foundation, a Los Angeles-based non-profit philanthropic organization that provides individual artist grants to U.S. photographers. Prior to his position with the Foundation, Mr. Wride spent 14 years at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) as a Curator in the Department of Photographs. During his tenure at LACMA, Mr. Wride curated over twenty-five permanent collection focus exhibitions as well as numerous larger exhibitions. As an independent curator, he is actively researching and mounting exhibitions with major museums internationally. He is also the founder of The Curatorial Eye, offering lectures, seminars, workshops, and mentoring to photographers, collectors, and not-for-profit institutions.
COMING SOON: Tim is launching a special course for photographers called Boot Camp. This is a three-month program of goal-setting, follow-up, follow-through, review sessions and accountability that is designed to strengthen your process, your conviction, and your eye as an artist. The Art of Photography Show welcomes professional photographer an...d author Judith Fox. She will be giving a sneak preview and A/V presentation about her new book, "I Still Do: Loving and Living with Alzheimer's", a poignant and beautiful portrait of a man with Alzheimer's as seen through the loving lens and words of his wife and care-partner. Early VIP release of the book will be available at the event.
More than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's. "I Still Do: Loving and Living with Alzheimer's" puts a human face in front of the statistics, exploring the disease through Fox's intimate photographs and poetic writing. While the details of I Still Do are personal and unique, this deeply candid story of illness, aging, partnership, and loving is universal. The transformative power of art as witnessed in this book is a love story that transcends illness and aging.

The Art of Photography Show
The Art of Photography Show, an international competition and exhibition of photographic art, welcomes Jim McHugh. McHugh is recently most known for his fine art photography. His 4x5 Polaroid images of the vanishing urban landscape of Los Angeles are exhibited widely and are included in many prestigious collections. Hi...s show LA Skies is presently on display in Paris and will be part of the FIAC festival there in October.
McHugh is currently on the masthead of Architectural Digest, for whom he has photographed such celebrity covers as Candice Bergen, Tina Turner, Kelsey Grammer and Claudia Schiffer. Jim is one of the original contributing photographers for People Magazine, photographing and traveling with everyone from Clint Eastwood to Ronald Regan.
As a personal project he has photographed leading painters and sculptors in their studios and is presently working on a book with English artist David Hockney. These artist’s portraits have become the subject of books and numerous exhibits in America and abroad.
.
This evening will be a show of his work as well as a talk about transitioning back and forth between fine art and assignment photography. McHugh uses handheld Speed Graflex 4x5 cameras that are 50 years old and the latest digital capturing systems. His prints are selling very successfully and he personally does his own printing. He is cited in Color, the collector’s magazine, as one of the few photographers in America who have been able to straddle both technologies to create an entirely unique photographic vision.
The fifth annual Art of Photography Show exhibition includes the top 111 photographs selected out of 16,000 entries from 57 countries by Charlotte Cotton, the Curator and Head of the Photography Department at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The exhibition will be on display at the Lyceum Theatre Gallery until November 1, 2009.
