The Assembly

The Assembly Theater Project (formerly The American Story Project) is a New York based ensemble of multi-disciplinary artists formed by five Wesleyan University graduates. Assembly members seek to unite our varied interests in service of creating wide-reaching, unabashedly theatrical and rigorously researched ensemble performances that address the complexities of our ever-changing world. We embrace collaboration as the core of our creative process, developing all the elements of text, action, and design side-by-side within the rehearsal environment. Our plays have been performed in Edinburgh and Connecticut as well as in multiple venues throughout New York City: The Ontological-Hysteric Theater, The Brick Theater, The Bowery Poetry Club, The Abingdon Theater Complex and The Flea. OUR MISSION: We seek to forge a new theater, to shatter, stretch and bend theatrical convention almost to its breaking point, until its shape reflects us today. By uniting the infinite languages that compose the vocabulary of theater: movement, rhythm, poetry, environment, research, genre, music, light, etc., we strive to create a symphonic landscape. But the creation of a new theatrical form needs a purpose outside of itself. We work because, at its best, theater creates community, asks the impossible questions, expands expectations, and reveals our deepest selves. We speak honestly and openly about our own experiences, realizing the limits of our perspectives. And when our work no longer represents who we are, we tear it down and make something new.
