Been there, done that. I've had Asperger's all my life (I'm 70)and just found out what my problem was 2 years ago when my daughter was diagnosed with it. People,it seems especially the schools seem to think we are retarded, "bad", or just weird. Fnally we got the State head of special student services involved and hinted at a federal lawsuit. That IEP is mandated and the school, or state can't jerk it around.
Good luck! you'll need it. MC

Many states provide training through the Dept of Education to allow citizens to become special education advocates that mediate between schools and parents. I truly enjoyed the time I spent doing this!

I have a five-year-old son who was diagnosed with autism two years ago. We've had great results with ABA, and he started in a regular kindergarten class this week. What we discovered at that point is that the educational system is fundamentally broken when it comes to offering meaningful education to our children with autism. As my husband and I ... Read Moresearch for answers for our son, I wondered if some of you might share your stories, concerns, and ideas about how we might change public education to better educate our children. I have started a Facebook group called "Autism and Education." I invite any of you who are interested in having a discussion about education and autism with other parents, educators, and concerned citizens to join the group and share in our work of describing and implementing significant educational change.

Sounds great! A beginning experience for an Autistic child is what he will remember about an event the most. So if you were patient with him and let hiim do things at his own pace, he will likely remember it fondly and be ready to go in the water the next time around! It's good to hear folks taking their time with Autistic kids! I know, because I am an autistic adult!

Your right! Autistic kids need their folks to advocate for them endlessly because otherwise they do get kicked aside. I love hearing that folks are interested in helping childran on the spectrum they way I am seeing here.
But there is "NO CURE" for Autism. It is a neurological disorder of the brain and a person born with it, dies with it. But advocacy is a very good way to help the kids with Autism feel loved and accepted for just who they are!
