The Ballet Bag Get ready for Wayne McGregor's upcoming world premiere, Limen or learn more about the background & work from the Royal Ballet's resident choreographer with this mammoth fact card:

Source: theballetbag.wordpress.com
Concepts such as coding, decoding, generative systems, algorithms, computer programming, neuroscience and cognitive mapping seem more akin to geek lingo than ballet choreography and yet all these notions inform Wayne McGregor’s dance making.

The Ballet Bag Steven McRae is a busy bee this week. Having just debuted as Prince Florimund in the Royal Ballet's Sleeping Beauty he now prepares to tackle Tetley's Sphinx and McGregor's Limen this week. The Ballet Bag Checked out Ashley Bouder's amazing turns earlier today? Now do your homework on Pirouettes, Fouettés, Piqué Tours, etc.

We are back with another edition of Bag of Steps. This time we look at every turning trick designed to make us go “whoa” and typically reserved for the grand finale, such as in the coda from a Pas de Deux .

The Ballet Bag For those of you who like us, cannot see Ashley perform as often (please come to London!), go and check this stunning video.

The Ballet Bag Royal Ballet's leading MacMillan dancer Edward Watson talked to us about the choreographer's legacy in the context of the upcoming symposium to explore and celebrate Kenneth MacMillan's creative genius.

The Ballet Bag If you are planning to catch Morphoses at NY City Center check out what we thought of their London season (Programme one):

Source: theballetbag.wordpress.com
Morphoses’s third London season has just come to a close. This year they came almost entirely depleted of its NYCB roster, something we lament since we cannot easily cross over the Atlantic to see that fabulous team at home. ...

We agree, booing in dance is never ok - the only exception is: the villain, we traditionally boo while at the same time applauding them in the UK as a joke. Carabosse always gets it ; )

First of all, I am a great charlatan, although one of brilliance; second, I’m a great charmer; third, I’ve great nerve; fourth I’m a man with a great deal of logic and few principles; and fifth, I think I lack talent; but if you like, I think I’ve found my real calling — patronage of the arts. ...

We just came back from a talk with the lovely Alina Cojocaru at the Ballet Association. As eloquent in words as she is in dance, she gave us a very honest account of her injury of 3 years ago and the painful road to recovery and how since then every moment she gets to dance really counts. She is a wonderful artist and... we feel privileged to have heard her speak of the trials and joys of being a dancer.
We are now counting down to her Sleeping Beauty later this month, anyone else going?
