The Cornerstone For Teachers

The Cornerstone For Teachers Right now the best part of being a teacher is this series of positive & productive interactions I'm having with parents. Several cried when I said I appreciated how hard they're trying with their kids despite tough circumstances. I always like my kids better after spending time with their parents--I adore the good kids... more & have increased empathy toward the troubled ones.

I don't always look forward to my parent-teacher conference night since it takes me away from my own children, but I always feel good afterwards. The parents of my students are hard-working and loving parents. It's good to connect with them, especially when working with over 100 students a day.

Amen!! Parent/teacher conferences are such a sweet time, especially if I am talking to Christian parents about how the Lord is working in their child's heart.

Stephanie

Stephanie Thanks for your advice on my one student who rushes. It really helped me take a look at her deeper and realize that she was bored AND in need of attention. I hope that throughout the school year I am able to break her habit and make her successful in the future!

Oh, awesome, I'm so glad you figured out what the root cause was! It makes it SO much easier to find a solution. Yay! I'm excited for you AND her!

Mizzb Tattler Hi Angela,
I thought you and your fans might be interested in the Teachers' Letters to Obama project that Anthony Cody has created. The deadline to write the letter to President Obama is November 23rd: let him know what you think education needs right now.

Teachers have some great ideas for President Obama. This group is a place to share feedback and concerns, and offer insight from the perspective of the classroom teacher.
Glenda Dunson

Glenda Dunson Hi Angela. it is 12:54 am and I am awake! National Board score release is in a few hours and I am a 2nd timer. I am hoping for the best. I only need 6 points. Who knows? Maybe I'll get it. Anyway, you have been an inspiration throught the process. I'll let you know after school if I can add NBCT to my signature.

Lydia Miller

Lydia Miller I am a pre-service teacher and have a question? Do teachers really dislike report cards as much as my professors say? If so, why or why not?

I think many teachers feel that the grading system they're forced to use is unfair, overly subjective, disconnected from student promotion, and time-consuming. Maybe someone else will chime in here, but I think in general, giving report card grades is definitely a sore spot for many teachers.

Sabrina Maitre hello! Do you know this website? I've used it for years. I use the stampers and my pupils love them (even - actually, especially the teeangers!). You can even customize your own stampers! http://www.superstickers.com/ (haveno royalties whatsoever!)

The Cornerstone For Teachers I'm officially an H1N1 vaccine guinea pig. I considered the possible adverse side effects, but they were giving the shots at school today, and honestly, I can't bring myself to turn down anything that's free. Your thoughts on it?

my question is this... would you get a snake bite vaccine because there is a chance you might get bitten by a snake? i'm not causing trouble but enjoy this conversation....

Ah, Amanda, touche...I totally see your point. I don't think I would have gotten the vaccine if it hadn't been so convenient, and again, free. One of my friends was like, Angela, seriously, we have to get you off this FREE thing. ;-)

Angela Dwight Comer

Angela Dwight Comer So need your advice: My supervisor today told me that I love the children in my class too much. I was really unable to respond to that in that I have just had to restrain a little girl from grabbing the knives in a school cafeteria kitchen and in the process of the restraint she sprained my arm and about took over a fo...ur shelf unit of dangerous kitchen utensils. I am sore, my arm hurts and is swollen and I am crying inside for this baby and not sure how I feel about the advice from my supervisor. Wondering....

I'm sorry that happened. It sounds like your supervisor is saying you haven't drawn the boundaries between your personal and work lives, and you are internalizing the kids' issues. If you are laying awake at night on a regular basis worrying about how your students are being parented, I hate to tell ya, but s/he's probably right. It's very ... See Moredifficult to be concerned but detached, and it takes awhile to learn how. It took me 3-4 years of intermittently crying at home for my students before I finally learned to give my all at school, and let it go at 3:00; to learn how to do what I could then trust the sovereignty of God and allow Him to be responsible for those things I couldn't control. Hang in there, hon!!

The Cornerstone For Teachers Twice in 24 hours now I've heard a business person refer to kids as the school system's "clientele". Barf. I don't care if it's a technically-correct usage of the word.

Tell it! Kids are not clients; they're kids. There's too much consumerism directed their way already.

Yes, exactly, we don't need more consumerism in schools, and this business-speak reeks of it. Learning provider? Customer service workshops? Ugh. Too far.

The Cornerstone For Teachers

The Cornerstone For Teachers My class is totally pumped about writing/illustrating their autobiographies. Only 1 kid assumed the dejected writer's block slump & needed some encouragement ("write about something interesting you've done!"). I was floored by his embarassed response: "Well, I don't have anything to say, because most of my life, I only... played video games."

I did Lucy Calkins at one school for 3 years--best. program. ever. BTW, I started reading the autobiographies today (most are still in the beginning phases) and they're REALLY creative! The kids are using all types of features real authors use. I'd share more, except for that pesky confidentiality thing...but even our video game lover has spun a good tale. Related to playing a videogame, but a good tale nonetheless. ;-)

Angela Dwight Comer

Angela Dwight Comer I love this where I am able to ask others for help through your page. Just to let others know that we are all in the same boat makes me feel better. I have three e. d. children that are making my classroom a wreck. Getting along is becoming a problem. I have so many needy ones that on most days I am the mom and not the... teacher. Finding clothes, helping to deal with the nightmares that have kept the kids up all night. N ot having warm clothes, or clean clothes. I am worn out for caring. The class is very kind, just have so many issues themselves, how can they not help but think that they deserve constant attention..... Help.....

Thanks for chiming in there for Lori! I love that you did that. As for your situation...I am finding this to be the case in MANY classrooms: a few kids who wreck everything, and the rest of the class sweet but extremely needy. I don't have any pat answers for you, but it DOES help to focus on the fact that the majority of kids aren't monsters (... See Morethat can't be said for all classes!). Stay focused on what you're doing that IS working, and give yourself permission not to meet every need every day. It just isn't possible. The kids' biggest need to is to feel safe and loved in your classroom...if you are accomplishing that, you've done a lot. :-)

Lori Meeker

Lori Meeker I forgot to mention that all of my students go to lunch, recess, and enhancements with their own grade levels, so I have students coming in and going out of my class all day long. If I wasn't ADD before I started this job, I think I've developed it. :-)

you must be an amazing teacher. I try to make my standard that we are working on apply to three levels that way i know that my ells and my highs and lows are getting something. Do your standards go accross grade levels. We have some in Az that are introduced in Kinder and then build all the way to fourth grade so you can have the same objective but at different levels. Maybe this will help
