The Dead Mule School of Southern Literature Am seriously considering creating a NBC - an invention inspired by my IUOMA friends traveling novel project. NBC? Novel By Committee. Not an online process but a real mail, US Postal Service If-It-Fits-It-Ships style. Anyone interested in contributing? The cost will be the $4.95 shipping fee for each writer. No cost other than that. Want to know more?

I will create a page of rules and constraints - and a sign up email or chat room ... I'm thinking writers get to keep the NBC for 5(?) days and then mail it to next person on list. There will be a page limit (it'll be hand written) and illustrations are encouraged. We'll make a special area on either FB or the Mule... gotta' work out The Kinks (you really got me going) and details, so I'm open to suggestions. The Mule will purchase the "novel", the bound paper and begin the novel.

Writers will have to stick to story line and characters - details will be at front of book. This way the novel doesn't go all over the place and stays true to its concept or outline.

The Mule wouldn't dictate story arc or that type of constraints, it just needs to stay on track with the general idea put forth in beginning. That's a problem IOUMA novel seems to have...... See More

but I'm thinking about adding some black and white photos every 10 pages or so, to add interest and to spark imagination.

ummm, might need bigger box, the next size up, the $4.95 one is rather small.

Poets are going to have to be patient, too. The Mule is full through January, and we're looking for Black History Month poems for February. Response will be slow for a bit.

We love the South. We appreciate all the quirks, follies, and faults that have brought the region to where it is today. If our beloved “below the Mason-Dixon Line” self gives way to the influences ...

Lisa While there was no Faulkner, and I was hoping for Flannery O'Connor, Southern writers being taught at Auckland Univ - as evidenced by titles in the classes section of the bookshop today at end of term - include Dorothy Allison, Patricia Highsmith, Maya Angelou, Edgar Allen Poe, Zora Neale Hurston, Mark Twain, Tennessee Williams, Toni Morrison.
