Thank you for the vast information re Diamond dog food!!
Several decades ago, I was told this was a "primo" dog food; after the first recall, that was it with Diamond -- now, my dogs are eating homemade + vitamin & mineral supplements. They have "rag" toys which can be washed; nylabones that cannot be eaten - well, not my dogs.
Our dogs are ... Read Morefamily - as with SO many companion animal lovers -so what they consume is NOT going to be a food {YOU KNOW} has dangerous ingredients. All of us have to more diligent - read the label! If you don't know what an ingredient is - or several ingredients are - put down the box or bag!! Look up the ingredient(s) on the Internet!!!
You want to eat safe, healthy & good-tasting foods -- so do your companion animals!!! Be Careful - it's scary out there.

Natalie, I do seminars by invitation, so if you have a group/club of interested dog owners, or a trainer, or pet sitter, or a local retailer (like Pussy & Pooch here in L.A.) who is interested in educating customers etc. and would be willing to host a seminar, please contact me and I'll send out the information.

Just like Natalie, I'd love to have you conduct a seminar. I live in Tulsa; if I contacted a retailer like PetsMart , and they agreed to have a seminar at one of their two locations - how would they contact you? Phone call? Letter? Email? Hopefully, I can get PetsMart to agree to The Dog Food Project to have a seminar in Tulsa!! If not, I can contact the local ASPCA, HSUS, or another animal rights organization to help to have a seminar here!
Thank you!!

The Dog Food Project New article added: Meat vs. Meat Meal

Source: www.dogfoodproject.com
The meat ingredients in dog food are among the topics that cause the most confusion among pet owners. Is "fresh" meat better than meat meal? Is all meat meal bad? What about "human grade"?

I completely agree. A WELL baked kibble with good wholesome ingredients will surpass any extruded food. Have you ever been in a factory using extrusion process? The odor is unbearable. But, an oven baked facilities smells more like a bakery. Most dogs would turn their nose away from an extruded product even with flavor enhancers. You cant fool ... Read Morea dog's sense a smell...and what good is a dog food with the best ingredients if it the dog will not eat it.

BTW, "fresh meat" must pre-processed into a "meal" before it can be mixed with other essential ingredients and baked into a high quality oven-baked kibble. Otherwise, it wouldnt be a baked kibble, it would just be a "hamburger". Proper pet food manufacturing techniques calls for binders, such as grains or starches to keep it all together and to balance the nutritional factors. Frankly, I would rather have (whole) Grains instead of refined starches in my dog food.

The key point is the ratio of the meat vs. grains vs. other ingredients. Ingredients are listed in order by volume. the less grain the better, but you really cant do without it. I would be cautious of GRAIN FREE kibbles which rely too heaviliy on starches, xanathan gum & other binders to keep the Kibble all together.

I like Flint River Ranch - Oven Baked Kibbles. It was one of the few brands that did not get caught up in scandal & recall involving melamine found in pet food ingredients from China. Google: pet food recall of 2007, and visit the FDA web site. You'll be surpised how hundreds of pet food brands are made be only a handful of pet food processing mills.
