I'm hosting a college graduation party for my husband in January. He's older (took him awhile to finally finish!) so it's not like we're 22 and still living with our parents. My question: How do I word the invitation to say "no gifts, please." The invitation is formal and the reception is from 6-9 pm. We just want ...everyone who supported us these last few years to get together for food and wine and just have a good time. We're not out for gifts--what would someone give a 34-year old anyway? I don't like the sound of "your presence is the present." Makes me gag, a little. Suggestions?Read More

Q: The other day I cheerfully asked an acquaintance when her baby was due. She replied that she had given birth three months earlier. Mortified, I blurted out, “I’m so sorry. I hope I haven’t insulted you!” What would’ve been a better thing to say? A: Don’t be too hard on yourself. Your respo...

This is a painful memory my little sister has. She went to a girl scout meeting and our mother, who had no tact, asked a larger woman when she was due. My sister, 7, cringed. The woman replied crisply, "I'm not pregnant, I'm fat!" My sister wanted to crawl away and hide under a rock.

Q: If someone arrives early for a business meeting, is it impolite to keep him waiting? A client of mine showed up 30 minutes early, but I met with him as scheduled-which my boss later said was rude. Was it...
