The Good Soldiers
“From a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer at the height of his powers comes an incandescent and profoundly moving book: powerful, intense, enraging. This may be the best book on war since the Iliad.” —Geraldine Brooks, author of People of the Book

Colette

Colette David, congratulations on all the well-deserved recognition. You already know how I feel about the book:

www.tampabay.com
In The Good Soldiers, Washington Post reporter David Finkel writes about the Army's 2-16 infantry regiment, commanded by Lt. Col. Ralph Kauzlarich. Some soldiers were injured in Iraq, others suffered from PTSD, many were heroes. Colette Bancroft reviews David Finkel's The Good Soldiers.

Travis Weiner Thank you Mr. Finkel, for finally writing something on this war that represents all the intangibles, the subtleties, the enraging contradictions, the fatalism, the boredom, the brief moments of terror......noone understands but those of us that were there. You have done a great service, and your book will go down as th...is war's Catch-22, or SlaughterHouse Five, etc.

David-

Not as much more then you might think. Based on your accounting, you were witness to numerous IED's, Mortars, and Small Arms, just like me and the rest of the grunts. I suspect that the soldiers of 2-16 grew to respect you for your proximity to the action and your accurate reporting. I cannot tell you how it is to read a book like this that... See More really, really just gets it-it is neither a drab tactical/strategic review, nor an overly emotional or exaggerated tale, but unabashed, unfiltered reality, which in this war means confusion, terror, boredom, hatred, dark humor, indifference, etc., etc., among ALL levels of command. It is also just a great book, as you are a great writer. I have told all my old buddies in the 2-502 Inf. to read the first book that won't piss them off about the war. What you wrote, will resonate with anyone who was there who experienced any aspect of it you wrote about. I cannot tell you what this means to those of us that experienced it-in ways only we understand, you are more of a patriot for what you have done then a lot of people with the yellow magnetic ribbons. Thanks again.

Travis Weiner This is the most accurate, amazing book on the war i've ever read.....this guy, for whatever reason, GETS it, gets things an embedded reporter should NOT get and should NOT understand but he does.....read it in two days, couldn't put it down.....this is the most amazing book I have ever read in my entire life

There's unrest in the countryside. Hopefully it will be taken to the ballot box. I pray so. The protagonists might not be evident at first look. The country survived 39 so shall we 44.

David Dear Mr. Finkel:
I blogged about your book today. Here's a link, which you should obviously feel free to delete if you think my post is off the mark or ill-suited for this page.
Thank you for your work. The Good Soldiers is certainly one of the best works of nonfiction I've ever read. With respect, I'd like to give even ...deeper thanks to the soldiers whose candor made your book possible and whose service made it a story so thoroughly worth telling.
Best,
David

Jack David, I'm the father of (now) SFC Jared Stevens (pg 54 & 3 other references). I read the book in two nights - an emotional effort for a parent. It immortalizes who our warriors are & what their contribution is vis a vie (unstated) their supporting 90 percent. Too few know. Thanks for your work.

Thanks for writing, Jack. I hope Jared is doing well. I remember so clearly the day he was shot and standing outside with him afterward when he was able to call home. He and I had many chances to talk, and I was grateful for every one of the conversations. Just a great guy, your son.

Alan

Alan says I've never read a book that made me cry until I read this book. My son was there in the 2-16 and this tells me everything he didn't want to tell me when he was there. All of our soldiers are heros in many different ways and you have written a book that documents the reality of what makes a hero. A real time cap...sule; a snapshot of my son's life at that time and I thank you for writing it. And putting your life on the line to do it too.

Derrick is out of Ft. Carson now and will be redeployed to Iraq in March of '10. Derrick is resilient and will be fine. He's thinking you should come back with his new group and write a sequel "After the Surge"......ha ha....Take care

Claudio Vazquez

Claudio Vazquez David, I finally got around to finishing the book... what a read! Two things came to mind: 1- I kept wishing I was reading fiction. 2- This book should be required reading for any one who would like to use the words "war" and "Iraq" in the same sentence. Congratulations to you, and my best to all the servicemen, servic...ewomen and their families. Thank you.
