It is not a dream itself, but all the things that happen to Sarah are clearly a metaphore, an alegory; the story represents her childish dreams and at the end she understands that she must leave all that behind, she grows up. She used to spend her time imagining fantastic stories and all that stuff, and that it's not w...rong but it's not good if she forgets other things. It's all about growing up.
I reckon that at the end Sarah's friends only come back in her imagination. In my view, that means that despite having to say goodbye and grow up, it did was nice meeting them and she learnt lots of things. And that she doesn't have to forget them completely, but now she knows dreaming is not that good if she forgets about real life.
