Day of the Dead is a festive time to honor deceased relatives, satirize the living and entice the spirits to visit with flower-decked altars and offerings of food.

The Festival of Souls is one of Mexico’s most distinctive holidays and is considered a day of cheerful celebration rather than mourning. In keeping with tha...t spirit, the Latin American Coalition and the Levine Museum of the New South present a free day of fun for the whole family with traditional foods, folkloric dances, cultural arts & crafts, bilingual storytelling and children’s activities. New this year is a community altar-building contest with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes. Participants will engage in the meaningful and creative work of constructing these centerpieces, and event-goers will vote on their favorite altar.

• In Mexico, las posada s are celebrated every evening from December 16 to 24; each night before Christmas, a party is held in a home in the neighborhood, in churches and at schools. These celebrations commemorate the pilgrimage of Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of shelter. At dusk, all the guests gather outside the house, a child or an adult dressed as an Angel leads the procession, children carry the figures of Mary and Joseph, and the guests constitute the procession, they walk slowly carrying their lit candles. When they reach the house, the group divides in two. One group remains outside and singing begs for shelter. The other half which is inside the house responds singing too. Then the doors of the house are opened, everybody enter into the house singing.

• The happy end to each Posada has always been the piñata, , traditionally made in shape of a star, filled with fruits and candies.
