Hi Greg. McClatchy Communications Director Peter Tira here, manning our social media desk today. I can only speak for myself, certainly, but I would be willing to pay for some online access, yes. I'd have no problem paying for a good mobile app on my iPhone, for example, though if every newspaper started charging for this feature I'd probably ... See Moreconsider my choices more carefully. As a print subscriber, I'd like to think my online access would be covered without any additional charge. I don't think I would pay for generic news content available everywhere else on the web, but I would consider paying for some premium content -- perhaps some particularly good coverage of my favorite pro sports teams I couldn't find anywhere else or some really insightful and valuable, to me, local news coverage, perhaps a favorite columnist or blogger, or two. Cheers.

I would prefer some kind of subscription model where I could access a number of publications for a fixed monthly fee. I have to say, my News and Observer seems to get smaller and skinnier every day.

Online news isn't limited to newspapers, and there is little scarcity for the types of news that various media companies are considering putting behind pay walls. So from an simplified economics standpoint, the same news will still be available for free from other highly competitive sellers in one or some of them put up pay walls for online news... See More. Why would I pay for news I can get free elsewhere?

However, instead of trying to put the mile-wide inch-deep coverage behind a pay wall putting the scarce inch-wide mile-deep coverage behind a pay wall makes economic sense. If I can't get the news somewhere else I might be willing to pay for it. Uniting with competitors to set a price for a good is called collusion, and I think media companies have already had enough problems :P
