The central exploration of Haynes‘ work is concerned with the cumulative effect of memories on shaping the self. The act of cont...inually layering these renderings, as a representation for human thought, is intrinsic to her reasoning. Haynes’ artwork is representative of the idea that within a person’s life there can exist the looming threat of psychological upset that is, as yet, not evident to the person themselves but is highly apparent to those around them. Repressed memories act as a dangerous potential problem within the individual’s existence. This undisclosed social problem is equitable to the notion of the ‘elephant in the room.’
