Oh Mitch, way to be an activist pal. You show 'em. You're right (Whoops, i mean left). They're not part of the community. Well, actually they're not part of YOUR community. I grew up watching the Sonics and attending their games with family and friends. Frankly though, the Sonics were not integral to my community fabric either. The community that they were central to was the urban one, namely as a way to encourage, celebrate, and even revere African-American culture. There was no other place in Seattle where you could find 10,000 plus people of myriad varieties of life converging under one roof, 40-50 nights per year to acknowledge and applaud the unworldly mental and physical accomplishments of black people.

Even in liberal ol' Seattle minorities have a history of being denigrated. The Sonics, and their impact on the greater regional community, were, to an extent, influential in celebrating, rather than vilifying, multiculturalism here.

Sure, the team came into existence as a for-profit business, not as a tool for cultural enrichment. I do think that the players and executives make an absurd amount of money. And I generally agree with arguments that tax dollars should not be used to subsidize a sports team, or any private enterprise for that matter. Lastly, if you're going to call the Sonics "blood-sucking," than you should also throw your Starbucks into that category because they were run by the same goddam vampire. And if you think a five dollar cup of coffee is "useful," than I've got a ten dollar Butterfinger to sell you.

Ouch! Yes, Starbucks is a blood sucking corporation that sells a habit forming drug. There was a time when the big name sports teams were a part of the community, even though they were for profit businesses, but that time has long since passed. I'm sorry to dis people who have fond memories of those times - the cheese has been moved.
