Adapted by James Agee from a novel by Davis Grubb, The Night of the Hunter is legendary actor Charles Laughton’s only film directing effort; while combining stark realism with Germanic expressionism, the movie is a brilliant good-and-evil parable.

Great film and cinematography is top rate. Great performances by Shelly Winters, Robert Mitchum, and Lillian Gish. My favorite lines, though, are by Evelyn Varden (playing the part of Icey Spoons) near the end where she's got this crazed look in her eyes... "Satan hides behind the cross" and "“Lyyynnnch him! Lyyynnnch him!" Just priceless.

Chuck and I watched it last month on old movie channel..Gave me the creeps...Robert Mitchum seemed to be out of character. Have you ever heard of or watched the old black and white movie "Always in My Heart" made in 1947..Tried to find it..Not made into video or DVD as yet...best old movie I have ever seen.

This 1955 film noir thriller in black and white by Charles Laughton is a cinematographic achievement worth discovering. I watched it on television more than sixteen years ago and I still remember the haunting image of a murdered woman's hair moving in the depths of the water as her children flee downriver hiding inside a row boat.
