The Old Man of the Mountain

Sanford Smith

Sanford Smith It was a magical part of the world, Profile Lake, and the way the interstate just ends, and you enter that beautiful land.

Paula

Paula My sis and I went home two years ago and drove by a blank spot where the Old Man used to be...it almost seemed like a foreign place. What had marked our childhood with all the fond memories so many of you also recall...simply gone. Sad, so sad...but Mother Nature will do as she will and we are but mortals on this earth.

Lauren Roberts

Lauren Roberts Sooo many memories as a child driving through the Notch, rounding the corner and saying "can you see him yet, can you see him yet"," I see him, I see him!". I still look for him today!!! Miss him

Marylou L. Anderson

Marylou L. Anderson you are "official" to me! thank you for continuing to keep the memory for so many of us alive and well - the Man is part of my treasured past. No commercials necessary.

Sandra

Sandra Do any of you on here know the wonderful story the Indians have about the old man and how it came to be,It is a beautiful but sad love story.

Kristi Mullikin

Kristi Mullikin Ok...so if I'm understanding the update message that I received...FB is requiring this fan page to have a specific affiliation beyond residence to keep this fan page? How silly! I thought fan pages were for fans...not officials!

Deb Doyon

Deb Doyon SO sad not to see this anymore in NH !!

McKenzie Shepard

McKenzie Shepard "Men hang out their signs indicative of their respective trades; shoe makers hang out a gigantic shoe; jewelers a monster watch, and the dentist hangs out a gold tooth; but up in the Mountains of New Hampshire, God Almighty has hung out a sign to show that there He makes men." - Daniel Webster

Miss the Old Man, but thankful to have seen him many times!

Rainer Cooper

Rainer Cooper I lived out of state when i got the news that THE OLD MAN OF THE MOUNTAIN was lost;that was a sad day. I hope " LIVE FREE OR DIE" will never be replaced! NH is not the same state I grew up in anymore :(

Steve Bernier

Steve Bernier I had the opportunity to climb a couple of routes that finished on top of the ole man. Easy climbing but an adventure none the less. When I looked at the remaining rocks I chilled at the thought of that stuff coming down while we were on the climb. Wonderful memories though.

Anne-Marie Lamarre

Anne-Marie Lamarre
Back when I went to NH College I wrote a paper about the Old Man and I interviewed the "official caretaker." His name was David Nielson and before him his father (David Nielson Sr) was the caretaker. At the time he was the chief of police in Belmont. I'm not sure if he's still with BPD or not, but maybe it's a starting... point to someone who can help you find out who can authenticate this page? It would be a shame to lose it...Read More

Joanne

Joanne I like your page. I hope you don't lose it. I saw the Old Man when I was a kid and regret that I never took my own kids to see it. I thought I had all the time in the world.

Vincent Lyon

Vincent Lyon fyi i got both updates. just go to the inbox and the updates are hiding on the far left? I hope this doesn't get shut down! There must be some means of validating the page. The face already fell down, let's at least keep the facebook page up! haha

Gayle

Gayle I scrolled down to your update of Sept. 24 about the changing seasons. I saw a couple of references to an update in between but not the update itself.
