The Outfield formed in London, England in the early 1980's. The group is comprised of John Spinks, Tony Lewis and Alan Jackman. The Outfield has enjoyed a multi platinum career that has spanned over three decades as fans and critics alike have praised the group for crafting songs with Beatle-like melodies and classic rock grit.
The Outfield's debut album ‘Play Deep’ was recorded in 1985 and spawned the hits "Say It Isn't So", "All The Love In The World", "Everytime You Cry" and the mega hit "Your Love". With the massive success of Play Deep, which eventually sold 3 million copies, and constant touring, the band was now ingrained in U.S. radio.
In the summer of 1987, the band released their second album entitled ‘Bangin'’. The album produced the hits "Since You've Been Gone" and "No Surrender". No strangers to the road, they headed back out on tour with Night Ranger. Like the band’s runaway debut, ‘Bangin’ featured the same flawless pop craft and was certified gold.
The band’s third album, ‘Voices of Babylon’, was released in 1989. The album’s lead single, ‘Voices of Babylon’, was another U.S. Top 40 hit. The album was pulsating with well crafted power pop tunes. Singles such as "My Paradise" and "Part of Your Life" exemplified John Spinks' development as a composer. After the recording of ‘Voices of Babylon’, drummer Alan Jackaman left the band for personal reasons.
With the dawn of the 90's, the Outfield officially became a duo consisting of John Spinks and Tony Lewis. The Outfield also switched labels to MCA and released their fourth album entitled ‘Diamond Days’ which produced one of their biggest Top 40 hits, "For You". ‘Diamond Days’’ sound was a bit of a departure for the band but still displayed the group’s alluring sparkle.
The Outfield's fifth album, ‘Rockeye’, was released in 1992. The hit single "Closer To Me" was the album’s lead single. ‘Rockeye’ signaled the band’s return to a more signature sound of big hooks and polished harmonies. The album’s second single, "Winning It All", had gained momentum due to extensive play during NBC's NBA Finals’ coverage. Furthermore, the song was also included on a NBA Superstars series featuring Larry Bird and in the film The Mighty Ducks.
The band went on hiatus for much of the mid-1990s for a much needed break. As interest in the Outfield continued to swell, they returned to record an exclusive release for their fan club entitled ‘It Ain't Over’, then embarking on a tour. In 1998, they released ‘Extra Innings’, which was a compilation of several songs they wrote during the 1990s and also featured four new songs written in 1998.
The band reconvened in 2006 for the release of ‘Any Time Now’, the band’s seventh studio album. The songs romped with a confidence and highlighted the band’s consistent songwriting. The album’s single “It’s All About Love” received extensive air play on the adult contemporary charts.
Currently, John Spinks and Tony Lewis are in a London studio recording demos for what will be the Outfield’s next album. In addition, original drummer Alan Jackman has become increasingly involved in the studio as sessions progress. The songs from the sessions are infused with energy and are instantly identifiable. The band remain explosively melodic and tuneful in a classic Outfield way!
