What is music? When is sound just noise? The attempts of 20th-century composers to grapple with these questions generated some of the most important musical innovations of the era. In this concert, the Playground presents music that redefines these terms and examines the boundaries between them.

The performance will include:
Profilo Sintetico-Musicale di Marinetti (1924) by Silvio Mix
Suite for Percussion (1942) by Lou Harrison
4'33" (1952) by John Cage
Sound Patterns (1961) by Pauline Oliveros
O'Hara Songs (1962) by Morton Feldman
Clapping Music (1972) by Steve Reich
Dots, Lines, Zigzags (1976) by Sofia Gubaidulina
The Dead Man (1990) by John Zorn

The Playground Ensemble In exploring the themes of love and death, nostalgia and timelessness, George Crumb creates a powerful and nuanced sound world. His use of extended techniques and graphic notation and his emphasis on tone quality rather than melody brand him an avant garde composer, but his poignant and evocative, sometimes theatrica...l gestures are firmly grounded in Romanticism. His music has an immediate, almost visceral appeal.

Crumb was born in West Virginia in 1929. He studied composition at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, the Berlin Hochschule für Musik, and the University of Michigan, finishing his studies in 1959. After graduating, he began teaching at the University of Colorado, and over the next several years, his unique style emerged.

This performance will feature a broad sampling of his compositional output, including Five Pieces for Piano (1962), Eleven Echoes of Autumn (1966), and Easter Dawning (1991).

A special point of interest, tonight's program will open with the carillon piece Easter Dawning, performed on the beautiful Carl M.. Williams carillon on the University of Denver campus. This performance will be digitally streamed and projected into the Hamilton Recital Hall. This will be the first of what we hope will be many multi-media and web based Playground events.

In November of 2004 Roger resigned from the Czars in order to work on his own music. For six years, the Czars were his main project. He was fortunate enough to work with Simon Raymonde and Giles Hall in the studio on The Ugly People vs. The Beautiful People (Bella Union / Manifesto 2001). During his tenure with the band they also recorded Tim Buckley's "Song to the Siren" for a tribute called Sing a Song for You (Manifesto 2000), soundtrack music for the film "I'd Rather Be...Gone"(2000), X Would Rather Listen to Y EP (2002), and Goodbye (2004). Roger has opened for / played with Sixteen Horsepower, Woven Hand, Munly and the Lee Lewis Harlots, David Gray, Low, The Flaming Lips, Elf Power, Imperial Teen, Ron Miles, Violet Indiana, Hem, Devics, Joe Sampson, Porlolo, Patrick Park, Heirloom, Scout Niblet, Red Cloud, Cowhause / Janet Feder, Momen Terra, and probably a lot more. Other releases include: The Way Things Go (2003): What Would This Be For? - Porlolo / Roger Green Split(2004): Roger Green S/T (2005): Blossom (2006); Clear Running Water (2007); The Glenn Taylor Orchestra (2008).

itchy-O is Scott Banning (film/video, samples, drums/percussion, keyboards, and thunder-tube), Kirsten Vermulen (accordion), Conrad Kehn (vocals, vinyl) Nick Lloyd (guitar and banjolyn), Scott Waknin (bass), and Bill Englebach (drums).
Itchy-O began as a solo project in 2003 when the relocated experimental percussionist/filmmaker Scott Banning, (Super Collider, Alphajerk, San Francisco Taiko Dojo, Valley Fever, Extra Action Marching Band, and close associate of Crash Worship), emerged in Denver. Since then this project has crawled it’s way from it’s first primordial dark drone album Pulmonic to the recent bright and dynamic collective efforts of Phagocytosis. Conrad Kehn, (vocalist, improvisationalist, composer from Skull Flux and Kallisti now a professor of music at DU), joined in 2005 along with guitarist Nick Lloyd a student of flamenco guru Rene Heredia and in 2006. The film Whirl was made in 2007 and Kirsten Vermulen got on board with her accordion. Itchy-O began playing live scores to Scott Banning’s experimental films and Bill Englebach and Scott Waknin joined in late 2008.
