The Portal to Texas History Surely this is one of our most interesting collections to date -- photographs from the Dallas Police Department's investigation of the JFK assassination. Many thanks to our partners at the Dallas Municipal Archives and the Summerlee Foundation for funding Rescuing Texas this past year.

A large group of unidentified people are at the Denton County Jail located on Elm Street awaiting the hanging of J. Q. A. Crews. Crews was the last person to be hanged in Denton County. He was hanged for the murder of the Murrell family in Cooke County.

The Portal to Texas History Just uploaded a really great new collection from the Petroleum Museum in Midland. These photos are diverse in content, covering West Texas ranching heritage,
life in the Permian Basin boom towns, and early oilfield camps. The
images date from the 1890s to 1950s.

The UNT Libraries awarded an IMLS grant for "Classification of Government Websites in the End-of-Term Archive: Extending Depository Libraries' Collection Development Practices." This means great fun for us playing with 25TB of Web materials from three harvests of the .gov domain.

The Portal to Texas History On this day in 1959, Elvis completed his six month Army assignment at Fort Hood, Texas. While he was there, he was assigned to the A Company, 37th Armor, 2nd Armored Division and was trained as a light truck driver with a tank unit.
